"I took $100 from the second transfer I received from GiveDirectly and purchased an Ox. My plan is to keep it and sell it in the future when it has grown. I will use the money to purchase a dairy cow. This will enable me to get enough milk for the family. Besides that, I spent $70 on paying school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school. She is so happy and currently, she is studying well without being sent home like before. I rely on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village and the amount of money that I could get was so small. I was not able to pay all the school fees at once. Since I had built a house with the first transfer I spent $30 on purchasing the sofa set seats. The house now looks complete and whenever I have visitors I do not shy away to welcome them into my house. The rest of the money I spent on food, clothes, and other basic household needs that were missing at that time. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."

"I dream that someday I would purchase a cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk. Though I don't have the cash at the moment, it is my prayer that I realise this dream. I still have children in school and the inflation is high. Above all, I am grateful for the support that boosted my finances amazingly."

received a $25 second payment.
"The moment I received my last transfer, I thought of starting a poultry project where I used $15 to purchase three hens. This is because I believe that this would be a source of income in the future. I am a single man who depends on selling fish to earn a livelihood. The business has not been good recently, and it forced me to look after people's cows for survival. Additionally, I bought foodstuffs worth $10 for sustainability, and lastly, I saved up $5. I am happy for the continuous support from GiveDirectly that had uplifted our lives amazingly."

"GiveDirectly empowered my community tremendously. It is noticeable all over the village on the good deeds that the organisation did for us. People built houses, and others bought good dairy cows and also paid school fees for their children. We are forever grateful for the unrestricted cash that uplifted our lives. The organization does a marvellous job, hence I have not seen things that were not done well."

"I spent KES 40,000 on purchasing a heifer. This is a good breed that I have always wanted to own for better milk production. I used to buy milk before and this was so costly for us. I could spend KES 100 and because we did not have a steady source of income we were struggling to get that. Currently, I no longer buy milk since I have a dairy cow purchased from the first transfer. We purchased this heifer so that when it gives birth in the next three months I will get enough milk for the family and sell the surplus to earn some income. I will use the money from the sales of milk to meet other basic household needs and even pay fees for our children in various schools. Besides that, I spent KES 10,000 on building an extension room. We lived in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably, currently, my children have a room where they can sleep well without being disturbed. The rest of the money I spent on food and another household we were missing."

"I spent $230 to purchase a brand new motorbike on hire purchase, I am required to make payment of the remaining amount on an installment basis of $28 per week for a period of one year. The intention was to start a taxi business a reliable source of income for the family. Nowadays, I am happy to earn $5 per day on average after setting aside $3.95 for the payment of the bike. This income is helping me in meeting most of the family's basic needs like food and as well as educating my 4 children who are in primary school. Earlier, I depended on temporary casual labor that earned me $2 per day which was hardly enough to support the family's needs. In addition, I used $100 to complete the payment of a local dairy cow which I bought with the first transfer that was costing $170 in total. Furthermore, I spent $100 to purchase enough food for the family since we did not have sufficient food for the family due to the ongoing famine in our area. With the remaining amount, I bought proper clothes for the 6 children and my wife since they were wearing old and torn clothes something that was very embarrassing to me."

"School fees have been an uphill task that I have been struggling with for the longest period. This forced me to sell all the cows that I had. I am a mother of three children, married and a businesswoman, specializing in selling cereal in the local market. Receiving money from GiveDirectly was the best thing that had happened in my life. This is because I acquired two dairy cows worth $450 and $150, respectively. I am happy that I would save up the money that I used to buy milk daily. I am grateful for the support that made it easy for me to accomplish my goal in a short period."

"My two daughters and son are all in day secondary schools. I've been struggling to buy them food and pay their school fees because I don't have a steady job. I was reliant on the livestock-selling business to pay their school fees during good seasons, but they were frequently sent home from school. I am pleased that, upon receiving the second transfer, I spent $200 on paying their tuition fees, which has since increased their ample study time. I also spent KES $370 on an eight-month in-calf cow, which I expect to calf this month. I already have three lactating cows, so the additional purchase will increase milk production and thus income for my family of five."

"I have a family of three whose growth has challenged my monetary steadiness because of the unstable kinds of revenue. I have been battling a great deal in the earlier months. However, the receipt of the transfers has supported my ambitions a lot. Despite the fact that I am still struggling to provide for the day-to-day basic needs of my family, I am confident that the heifer that I purchased at $230 will be an income-generating source once it calves down. Not exclusively will the dairy cow give us milk, but selling its calves will help in the payment of school fees for my child, among other family needs. Aside from my only kid, I also have my young sister living with us and have been going to a nearby day school. On getting the second patch of the transfers, I took her to a better school where she can get better learning materials and boarding facilities. Taking her to the new school after spending $200 on her additional set of school outfits, and stationeries, and furthermore, paying part of her tuition charges made her grateful to GiveDirectly for the generous support. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on extending the poultry project I had begun with the first transfer, and at the moment, I have a sum of 20 birds and gathering not less than 10 eggs each day which thus, earns me an appreciable income that can settle the minor household bills."

"For quite some time I was using a small traditional bed that was not comfortable to sleep on. My four children used to sleep on a mat on the floor because they did not have a bed. Upon getting the second phase of the transfer, I first bought a bed and two mattresses for $130 one of the mattresses was for my children. This is because I also wanted my family to enjoy the comfort of sleeping well since the aim of the money was to better our living standards. As of now, my family is very happy sleeping well and comfortably not like before when they could wake up tired as if they were doing rigorous work overnight. I also bought a cow for $140. This cow was for remembrance purposes. Since GiveDirectly did a commendable deed to me, I vowed not to forget the organization by buying a cow that will give birth hence marking the existence of GiveDirectly at my home. I also paid $50 school fees for my four primary school children and used the remaining amount to buy food for my family since it was a drought season."
