How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Notwithstanding the scant resources right now following the spending of all the transfers I had gotten on the laid out objectives, I am still aggressive and want to grow the ongoing livestock selling business to guarantee consistent income that would cover all the family bills and school expenses for my kids. Alongside the extension of my ongoing business, I also have new objectives to develop another dairy shed that will enhance animals' care and stockpiling of their feeds. By giving a decent shed, improved production is guaranteed and this will support different undertakings I will run alongside.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
After providing us with the transfers and the opportunity to spend the money anyway we saw fit, GiveDirectly did a lot of wonderful things in our village. When we needed to take care of the immediate problems in our houses, we praised them for their limitless support and diversified spending patterns depicted in the village. It was only unfortunate that a small number of people were not enrolled as a result of the confusing information that other villagers gave the field officers. I'm pleased that they were able to clearly and understandably explain the cause for the affected families' exclusion from the project.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My two daughters and son are all in day secondary schools. I've been struggling to buy them food and pay their school fees because I don't have a steady job. I was reliant on the livestock-selling business to pay their school fees during good seasons, but they were frequently sent home from school. I am pleased that, upon receiving the second transfer, I spent $200 on paying their tuition fees, which has since increased their ample study time. I also spent KES $370 on an eight-month in-calf cow, which I expect to calf this month. I already have three lactating cows, so the additional purchase will increase milk production and thus income for my family of five.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4 Pm when My neighbor called me to say that he has received the transfer. When I checked my phone there was no money. I was a little bit worried but I was still hopeful that I will get the money. I retired to bed and when I woke up the following morning I got a message on my phone from GiveDirectly. It was indicated that I have received some money. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money. I informed my family members and everyone was so happy. I knew I would be able to pay school fees for my three children in secondary school. I went and withdraw the money and planned with my spouse.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have three children in various secondary schools, and being in a position to pay their school fees on time is the biggest difference in my daily life. This was my main priority since I wanted them to study well without being sent home like before. I depend on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village. This was earning me some small income and I was not able to pay all the school fees as required. My children sometimes were being sent home and they were missing some lessons. I was so stressed up because I had nowhere to get the money to pay on time. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. The main concern was to clear all the school fees balance to enable them to study well. Currently, they are so happy and have a humble time focusing on their studies. I hope to get a better performance compared to previous academic years. I have peace o mind to do my daily chores at home and save for the next term.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 35,000 on school fees for my three children in various secondary schools. This was the biggest challenge that I was facing at that time. My children would be sent home to collect the school fees and this was affecting their performance in school. Currently, they are studying well without being disturbed or missing some lessons. I spent KES 18,000 to settle the debt that I had borrowed from a friend. This gave me peace of mind since he has requested the money. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will bring a paradigm shift to my children's education. I have been struggling a lot to raise the school, so dire is the situation that I still owe the school KES 31000 for my daughter who recently finished her Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Education. Many times my children are sent home for school fees and it worries me a lot. It is for this reason that I plan to use the transfers to clear the fees arrears of KES 31000 for my daughter so that when the result is out sometime in May she will be able to be given a certificate that would otherwise have been kept by the school until all the fees arrears are settled. I will use the rest of the money to pay school fees for my other two children who are joining form one.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Sometimes last week the Kenya Primary School Examination were released and our two children passed well against all the odds and challenges of school fees. We were overjoyed and we are hopeful that they will be admitted to good secondary schools.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife had started the business of buying and selling maize. The business failed miserably and it plunged us into a serious debt that we are yet to finish settling. We had borrowed the loan of KES 125000 from a microfinance institution known as Kenya Women Finance Trust Fund(KWFT), to date we have never gotten back to our feet and the tribulations kept haunting us, we are yet to settle KES 75000 which we owe the institution. Financial challenges are the main problem we face right now. We have had sleepless nights and a lack of peace of mind, my wife was on the verge of undergoing depression as a result of it.
