How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any goals now, I am focusing on raising school fees for my three children in secondary school. This is my priority now. I rely on doing casual jobs in the village and planting horticultural produce. I sell the farm produce to get some money for the school fees. I wish to see them complete their studies without much struggle.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The majority of the people in the village have built better houses. Most of them used to live in small grass-thatched houses. Some of the people have invested in dairy keeping business. This has enabled them to get enough milk for the family and even sell the produce to earn some income to meet other household basic needs. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I took $100 from the second transfer I received from GiveDirectly and purchased an Ox. My plan is to keep it and sell it in the future when it has grown. I will use the money to purchase a dairy cow. This will enable me to get enough milk for the family. Besides that, I spent $70 on paying school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school. She is so happy and currently, she is studying well without being sent home like before. I rely on small-scale farming and casual jobs in the village and the amount of money that I could get was so small. I was not able to pay all the school fees at once. Since I had built a house with the first transfer I spent $30 on purchasing the sofa set seats. The house now looks complete and whenever I have visitors I do not shy away to welcome them into my house. The rest of the money I spent on food, clothes, and other basic household needs that were missing at that time. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm when my neighbor called me to say that she had received the money. When I checked my phone there was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. I was at work at that time. When I went back home I informed my spouse and children and everyone celebrated with joy. It was one of the happiest evenings we have ever had. I withdraw the money the same day and we started to plan how to spend it. The priority was to pay school fees for our daughter who was joining form one. I am so happy for the support from GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Building a better and more spacious house is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because we lived in a small grass thatched house which was leaking from inside. I have always wished to build a better house but I did not have the money to buy the building materials and pay the workers. I do casual jobs in the village and small-scale farming. I plant maize and vegetables. I was not in a position to save some money because of the recurring daily basis needs and school fees for my children. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I was in a position to purchase the building materials and pay the workers. I have a decent house now and I no longer get stressed whenever I have visitors at home. I used to host my visitors outside the house and this was so demoralizing and stressful. I am so happy because GiveDirectly had changed our living standards to be much better than before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 28,000 on school fees for my daughter who was joining form one. This could have been a big challenge because I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on casual jobs to earn some money. I spent KES 24,000 on purchasing building materials and building a better and more spacious house. We lived in a small grass thatched house which could not host all my family members comfortably. Currently, I have a decent house and I'm so happy for the support. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items that we were lacking at that particular time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved housing. I have one house which is grass thatched. This house, houses 9 household members including grown-up girls. Since it is taboo to sleep with older children under the same roof they have to go to neighbors' houses to sleep at night. As a parent, I am worried for them to walk at night alone looking for a place to sleep. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 30,000 to construct an iron-roofed house. This house will assist me in harvesting rainwater and my children will have a place to sleep in.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have two children in secondary school and I was able to clear their school fees through my casual job. This brought joy and happiness into my life as they are now sitting for their final exams.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge in my family is food insecurity. To get food for my family I do casual jobs in the nearby town carrying water to anyone in need. My pay is insufficient to meet all my household needs. This job is not constant also, especially during the rainy season. I earn KES 150 per day which I use to purchase food for my family and cannot make savings for days when I cannot get a job.
