How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Managing the farm's running projects, particularly the delicate groceries that require a lot of attention, has been a challenge since I began after the first transfer. I have no new goals at the moment due to the overwhelming amount of work I am doing on my farm, but I believe that with a potentially good harvest, I will diversify my production to reduce risks in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am grateful for the financial support I received from GiveDirectly, which helped to diversify our village's spending pattern. The freedom to spend on what we chose was a brilliant idea for which I will be eternally grateful to GiveDirectly. I completed all of my plans that were only possible with cash rather than material goods. As the organization expands to other villages, I wish them the best and hope that other people will have the opportunity to transform their livelihoods as well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk for my family of six on a daily basis has become so expensive in recent months that purchasing a cow with GiveDirectly support was pretty much inevitable. I could not put any money from the first transfer into buying a cow because I had other goals, so I spent $220 from the second transfer on a heifer. In addition to the one I already have, I am relieved that my family will be able to enjoy a plentiful supply of milk in the coming months when they calve. I also added a $70 sack of maize to our food store, which took us two months to clear out. When I got the second transfer, my new house was almost finished, but it lacked enough seats, so I had to spend another $80 on locally-made sofa seats. It is a relief to have seats in my living room that can comfortably accommodate a full house of visitors. I later used some of the remaining funds to acquire three sheep for K$35 each, and the remainder was spent clearing a debt I had with the milk vendor and paying it forward for a few weeks. I am grateful for GiveDirectly's quick transformation of my household because I could not have accomplished so much in such a short period of time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 5.24 pm while feeding my goats when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, it was the eagerly awaited KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and withdrew the money the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the purchase of a heifer. This will be a source of milk and income once it reproduces. For the past seven years, I desired to buy one but could not afford it.
Secondly, I am also grateful. Through the transfers, I now sleep well because I bought high-density mattresses.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father and milk vendor for the last year. In a day I get up to KES 150 in profits which helps to expand my business. I also do small-scale farming of maize and beans majorly for household consumption.
When the transfers arrived, KES 25,000 was spent on a heifer. This is because for fifteen years I have been buying a liter since my two dairy cows died about 12 years ago.
Secondly, I bought high-density two high mattresses at KES 8,000, and two beds at KES 7,000. Due to the coziness of the mattress, I now wake up at 8 am unlike before when I used to wake up at 5 am due to a low-density mattress that had become thin and uncomfortable.
Thirdly, I also bought three goats at KES 12,000. This is a long-term investment that will help with school fees payment.
Fourthly, I spent KES 10,000 on two pairs of the latest clothing fashion for my family. Initially, I used to wear second-hand clothes but now we are decently dressed.
Similarly, KES 2,000 was spent on plowing and planting maize seeds. This will reduce household expenses. Lastly, I also spent KES 1,800 on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to purchase a dairy cow. In our culture, we value cows for milk and as a source of income. I am a casual laborer and purchasing milk has been a challenge since my earnings are not sufficient to meet all my household needs. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 25000 to purchase a dairy cow. This cow will give us milk when it calves and even sells the surplus to generate income. I am glad that I live near a milk cooperative where I will be selling my milk.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have received consistent rainfall in the last month and since I had planted maize they have received sufficient rain. Their yield is promising and I am hopeful that this will improve food security for my family thus bringing joy and happiness into my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is food insecurity. I do any casual job I get around the village and in the nearby town. As a casual laborer, my family feed from hand to mouth, and these casual jobs are not consistent also. If I do not get a job my family will have to eat a meal once a day or in a worse scenario, they spend a night without food. This has stressed me as a parent since I have young children who need good nutrition for their growth. Casual
