Beatrice
received a $454 second payment.
"The new goal that I have now is to save money from the casual jobs that I usually do. I wish to purchase a dairy cow. I always buy milk daily which is costly for me. Purchasing a dairy cow will enable me to cut this cost and save the money for other basic household needs."

Nyevu
received a $455 initial payment.
"When I withdrew the money, the first step was to pay school fees for my grandson who was out of school for fees. I also bought two cows. Thereafter, I started building a how which stuck due to the inadequacy of funds. for the remaining amount, I opted to buy some food to sustain my family. Having settled those, I saved the remaining amount for the family's upkeep. I am feeling happy about getting a new house, even though it is incomplete, I am confident when I received the second transfer."

Naomy
received a $455 second payment.
"Our village is a semi-arid place and most of the crops are not doing well. I opted to run a poultry project because it was the only promising thing that the risk was manageable. My husband works as a masonry and together we have a child. For a very long time I have been buying milk daily for our daily needs, and this has been very expensive. I could not afford one before due to financial constraints. Upon receiving my transfer, I used $220 in purchasing a dairy cow and thereafter, used $100 on the table banking to attract interest once I am ready to collect the money. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and added some to my poultry business. I am so happy and grateful for the support that boosted our finances."

Wesley
received a $440 second payment.
"In recent months, motorcycle taxi has been my primary source of income for my family, having facilitated my children to attend school and eat adequately at home. The small savings I have been making with the village's informal savings groups have been made possible by the proceeds of the same business. At the moment, I am looking forward to a more profitable venture in livestock farming. Adding another dairy cow to the one I already have will result in increased production, and I will have to forego the motorcycle taxi in order to focus on feeding the cows."

Changawa
received a $455 second payment.
"In my village, we have mainly relied on subsistence farming to feed our families. Unfortunately, this year,we experienced a bad drought and crops failed. I'm thankful the transfers came at a good time, as I could buy food for my family. I spent 16,000 kshs to buy 4 goats which I will resell at a profit. I also bought a dairy cow at 15,000 kshs which will provide milk for sale and also my consumption."

Recho
received a $440 second payment.
"I spent $450 on purchasing a dairy cow. This has always been my dream to own a dairy cow and a good breed for that matter. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me since I do not have a steady source of income. I would spend $5 every two weeks on milk alone. This was so expensive since I had other bills to pay including paying school fees for my three children in various high schools. I rely on small-scale farming and run a small grocery business. The money that I always get is so small and it was only for basic household needs. I was not able to purchase a dairy cow. Currently, I can get enough milk for the family and I have cut the daily cost of purchasing milk which is so costly. I spent $50 on paying school fees for one of my daughters who is in high school. she is currently studying well without being sent home like before. The rest of the money I spent on food and other basic household items that we were missing. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."

Julius
received a $440 second payment.
"After spending all of the money I received from GiveDirectly on the goals I set for my household, I am pleased with the results. I am motivated and am currently working to ensure the long-term viability of my new livestock-buying and selling business. Even though I never had this new goal prior to the transfer, I am impressed that it is gradually picking up. I can currently buy at least three cows and sell them on the same day, making a good profit that supports my family of five."

Loice
received a $440 second payment.
"I have a new goal which is to buy a dairy cow. I have lately been thinking of keeping one because they do have sufficient benefits when you compare them with the other domestic animals. I trust that once I will own the cow, I will be getting plenty of litres of milk, and I aim to sell to the nearby dairy shops and generate an income. I will therefore have a stable source of income to fend for my family."

Sharon
received a $440 second payment.
"When I got the first transfer, one of my goals was to start a hair-dressing business to supplement the occasional one I was doing in the village. I thought it would be a simple venture because I had all of the salon equipment, but other family pressing needs prevented it. My objectives shifted when the first cow I purchased became ill and I had to sell it at a loss within the first two weeks. Budgeting the remaining funds to meet all of our goals became difficult, and we were forced to postpone the start of a business. At the moment, I am still working on the same dream, hoping that realizing it will eventually help me achieve other goals."

Geofrey
received a second payment.
"Buying milk for my family of six on a daily basis has become so expensive in recent months that purchasing a cow with GiveDirectly support was pretty much inevitable. I could not put any money from the first transfer into buying a cow because I had other goals, so I spent $220 from the second transfer on a heifer. In addition to the one I already have, I am relieved that my family will be able to enjoy a plentiful supply of milk in the coming months when they calve. I also added a $70 sack of maize to our food store, which took us two months to clear out. When I got the second transfer, my new house was almost finished, but it lacked enough seats, so I had to spend another $80 on locally-made sofa seats. It is a relief to have seats in my living room that can comfortably accommodate a full house of visitors. I later used some of the remaining funds to acquire three sheep for K$35 each, and the remainder was spent clearing a debt I had with the milk vendor and paying it forward for a few weeks. I am grateful for GiveDirectly's quick transformation of my household because I could not have accomplished so much in such a short period of time."
