How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals now since my main focus is to pay school fees for my three children in secondary school. I wish to save some money from the grocery job that I am doing to ensure that I pay the fees on time. It's the dream of every parent to ensure that their children get the best education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The majority of the people in our village were able to build a better and more spacious houses for their families. This is because most of them were living in small grass-thatched houses before. Besides that, some invested in dairy-keeping projects which are now doing so well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $450 on purchasing a dairy cow. This has always been my dream to own a dairy cow and a good breed for that matter. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me since I do not have a steady source of income. I would spend $5 every two weeks on milk alone. This was so expensive since I had other bills to pay including paying school fees for my three children in various high schools. I rely on small-scale farming and run a small grocery business. The money that I always get is so small and it was only for basic household needs. I was not able to purchase a dairy cow. Currently, I can get enough milk for the family and I have cut the daily cost of purchasing milk which is so costly. I spent $50 on paying school fees for one of my daughters who is in high school. she is currently studying well without being sent home like before. The rest of the money I spent on food and other basic household items that we were missing. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 6 pm while just relaxing and herding cows on my homestead that's when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, it was an MPesa notification showing that I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and couldn't keep the good news to myself.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is a sense of relief because I have cleared this term's fee. As a result, my kids have not been sent home due to school fees like before. Secondly, I have adequate food through the transfers which have relieved me of casual labor. Where I used to work and only get money for a kilo or two of maize meal which was not enough for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of seven and have been a vegetable vendor for over 30 years that is since I got married. This has helped feed and school, my kids, over the years. I also engage in subsistence farming of maize and vegetables which helps in household consumption. When the transfers came, KES 28,000 was spent on a young bull. This is to help me easily plow the land because all along I have been manually tilling my land. This is usually cumbersome due to the clay nature of the soil which is usually very hard. Secondly, KES 20,000 on school fees payment for my two daughters in high school. As a result, my daughters have fully attended their classes this term unlike before when they used to be in and out of school. Similarly, KES 10,000 was spent on two bags of maize of which one is over. Right now we are on the second one due to the large size of my family. This has helped reduce household expenses and I am grateful. Lastly, KES 5,000 was utilized on the latest clothing fashion because we could only afford second-hand clothes. Earlier on, we could only afford second-hand clothes of which I had only a pair for all occasions. From afar you could easily identify me by my clothing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean my last born adolescent son will have a house to live in, we have been wishing to build him a small structure because it has been uncomfortable sleeping in the same house with him. We find there is no privacy in living in the same house with him. I am planning on spending KES 20,000 to build him a semi-permanent house. For the remaining money, I will add one dairy cow to the ones I have, I depend on dairy farming and this is another chance to improve the productivity of the dairy farming by adding another cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Two months ago I harvested 3bags of maize from the farm, this means my family will have sufficient food for the next 3months. This will also save on the money I spend to buy maize and flour on a daily basis, maize is a staple meal in our community.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
School fees are my biggest challenge, I have two children in Mogor high school form 4, and Kataret secondary school form 2 respectively. They both have a school fees balance of KES 24,000. I do not have a stable source of income since I depend fully on selling vegetables within the village. This does not earn me sufficient money to cater to all the family needs like food and education. Receiving money from GiveDirectly will mean I will pay the school fees balance in time.
