"I am a mother of three who fully depends on my spouse to provide for the family. He is a motorcycle taxi rider who does not earn much. I struggle a lot since relying on him hinders me from doing my own projects as well as supporting my children. We have often had conflicts because I have nothing to offer as a wife leading to disrespect. This makes me feel so bad. I have always desired to have my own source of income so as to earn that respect."

"I have 2 sons' in secondary school, one in his 4th year in secondary and the second in his 2nd year. The payment of their school fees has been a big hardship on me because my husband is a motorcycle operator and I am doing charcoal business of which our earnings cannot sustain the needs of our house plus paying the school fees for my 2 children in secondary school . I also have 3 sons in primary school .I have been relying on my brothers and my in-laws to pay for my children's education. Receiving this money means I will be relieved the burden of school fees for my children."

"I am at my happiest in the morning because first I am grateful for being alive and healthy. Second, that is rush hour and I get a lot of punctures to fix for motorcycle riders who are in a hurry to take people to work. Sad as it may sound, we take advantage of this rush hour to hike prices for repairs, start off the day on a high and hope to continue well."

"I am a motorcycle taxi rider offering taxi services in the village. When GiveDirectly promised us the unconditional transfer, I was so happy and excited at the same time, I had great plans on how I would spend my money, initially I wanted to buy a machine used in milling maize but I changed my mind because the money was not enough, I then opted to buy 3 dairy cow worth KES 42,00 which I am hopeful that with time I would be able to sell them at a profitable price, I will then use the money in purchasing the machine. I used the remaining part of the transfer in buying clothes and foodstuffs. I am so happy and grateful for the support that has lifted my living standards." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I am a housewife. My husband is a motorcycle rider who transports palm wine to the market. He earns a total of 500KES irregularly because sometimes the production of wine is low that's when he decides to work here in the village and earn something to sustain us. Riding a motorbike long distances is tiresome and causes fatigue which can hinder him not be able to work the following day. As a mother have nothing to do to extend my help to my family. I had a small business here at home that could bring 150KES in a day, this helped my family when my husband missed an opportunity to work but it end up closed. I ate all the profit and the capital now I have nothing to depend on."

"I used to be a motorcycle taxi driver for 8 years until I got chest problems due to cold and I was advised by the doctor to stop riding motorcycles. I had no option but to stay at home and life has become difficult since then because that was what I knew how to do best. Currently, I do not have any reliable source of income and I do casual jobs to get money to support my 4 children single -handedly who their mother left after we separated. This has been the biggest hardship I have faced in my life."

"When I received my transfer, I spent KES 20000 to build a kitchen for my family and KES 25000 to purchase a heifer. Dairy cows are beneficial to people as they are a source of wealth and pride in our community. Due to this, I decided to purchase one using the transfer as an addition to the one I already had. I will be selling milk to my neighbors when they reproduce and use the money in paying school fees for my children. Preparing meals during the rainy season has been a difficult task for my spouse due to the leaking roof as it was grass-thatched and old. Because of this, we would at times take our meals late at night whenever it rains as it would be impossible to cook since the rainwater would extinguish the fire. I am glad since we're almost completing building an iron-roofed kitchen that will enable her to cook at anytime. In addition to this, I spent KES 2000 to buy new school uniforms for my children as they did not have and spent KES 4000 on home clothes for my family members after buying one sack of maize for our consumption at KES 3000." "The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am happy and stress free unlike before. This is because I now have water at my doorstep and I eat to my satisfaction as I was able to acquire a water tank and two sacks of maize using my transfer. I have been using this tank to harvest rain water and due to this, I do not incur any cost of hiring a motorcycle to help me ferry water from the river to home. In addition, I get to dress in clean clothes always since I have enough water at my doorstep and this has boosted my self-esteem."
