Judy
received a $498 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. I always buy milk from my neighbors and it's so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I do small scale farming and the harvest that I get is only for consumption. I do not always get surplus to sell. My spouse is a motorcycle taxi rider. He brings home little money, which we spent on paying school fees for our children in secondary school and collge. We had no savings at all. We had wish to own a dairy cow but it was not possible because we had no extra money. When I received money from GiveDirectly we decided with my spouse to purchase a heifer. When it produce in the next few months, we will no longer buy milk. We would have cut the daily cost. The money which we could have used to buy milk, we will save to meet other family needs. I am so grateful because were it not GiveDirectly I could not have own a dairy cow."

"The future looks bright and promising with the transfer that I received from GiveDirectly, my life is different now than it would have been if I never received the transfer, in that I was able to start a goat rearing project which I am hopeful that I would be able to earn an income, I can also sell some to offset few whenever the need arises. In addition to that, I was able to buy a donkey that will assist me in carrying water from the stream. I am grateful for the support that gave me a reason to be happy, my life has been lifted to a higher level in society."

Rehema
received a $498 initial payment.
"I spent KES 35,000 of my transfer to purchase building materials including 20 iron sheet, 60 buildings pole, nails, and timber. This was for the construction of a new decent house for my family. Similarly, I set aside KES 7000 to pay the contractor for labour cost. Previously, the house that I had was grass thatched, leaks and about to collapse. It was very risk to my family members and always worried that it may fall anytime. I also bought a bed and mattress for KES 11,500. Back in the days, I was sleeping on the floor with my small child using old sacks. This was not comfortable and the worst moments of my life because my small child developed skin rashes due to the maggots on the floor. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for the family."

Elisha
received a $482 second payment.
"I am a motorcycle rider famously known as "bodaboda" I do offer taxi services in and outside the village, When GiveDirectly staff came to our village, I knew that God had finally remembered us, we heard about the organization giving out unconditional cash to other villagers long ago, we thought that we had been left out. When I received the second transfer I bought a dairy cow with it so that I could cut down on the expenses of buying milk daily, therefore, used KES 39,000, I then used KES 11,700 in fencing the boundaries of my land to avoid intruders and idlers. I am so thankful for the support that changed our lives."

Amos
received a $498 initial payment.
"I am a motorcycle rider offering taxi services in the village, I am blessed with a wife and two children, I once had a motorbike but it developed a mechanical issue, I was forced to sell it at a throw-away price. the motorbike was my main source of income, therefore we were left with no option but to depend on other casual jobs to earn a living. When I received my transfer prioritized setting aside KES 20,000 so that when I get my second transfer I would be able to top up the money so that I could acquire a second-hand motorbike, I then used the remaining amount in purchasing a solar lamp, furniture, clothes, and foodstuffs. I am grateful for the support that changed my life to a better one."

"As the days go by, my health deteriorates, so does my strength. I am afraid I might not be able to work in the future and I will still require an income to take care of my needs. To avoid becoming a burden to my children, I plan a to purchase a motorcycle for hire. This has been my intention for many years and these transfers will facilitate the process."
