How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before I received this transfer, I always wanted to engage into dairy cattle rearing but I didn't have the right time planned for this project because I had no source of income. But upon receiving the transfers, it became pretty easier for me to to plan and implement my goals within a short period of time and with less struggles.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I believe GiveDirectly is transforming the living standard of most people. I wish someone would have taken a picture of how the situation within my village was and made a comparison of how it is now, there is a great difference. A lot of transformation has taken place in terms of housing where most people have changed from grass-thatched houses to using iron sheets and also in terms of farming.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I had no source of income, I wanted to venture into dairy cattle rearing to help me earn some income, but unfortunately, I could not manage to start the project due to the lack of financial resources. Luckily enough, GiveDirectly came to my support and the transfer that I received was of great help in terms of buying two dairy cattle worth KES. 45000 and spent the remaining amount of KES. 8150 on food. I believe with the dairy cattle, I will be in a position to generate some good monthly income from the milk that I will be supplying within the neighborhood to support my family and educate my four children without much struggle. I greatly appreciate the financial support that I have received and my children, wife, and I cannot hide the joy.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the construction site around 9. am. when I received a notification message confirming the receipt of my first transfer. At that moment, my co-worker and the owner of the construction we were doing were receiving the same news on their cellphones. We were all filled with joy, we celebrated, thanked God, and I had to inform my spouse as we had been expecting it together as we laid down strategies on how we needed to spend. Construction of a new house was at the top of the list, and she also confirmed that when I conveyed the good news to her.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the complete construction of a new and spacious house that has made our stay comfortable since we moved in. It had been a great challenge living in the previous hut that served as a kitchen, reading space for my children, and also a living room. It could inconvenience our children a lot every evening since the fumes from the cooking area could not allow them to comfortably concentrate on their evening studies. I am grateful for this far we have come, and hope that the second transfer will be of great help in the upcoming projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the first transfer that was marked with celebrations, the full responsibility of planning and executing the plans we already had was finally on our side. Even though every member of my family was so excited, I am glad that we never lost track of the initial plans we had. I managed to construct a new house after the purchase of 22 iron sheets, building poles, and other construction materials that finally totaled at KES35000 after paying all the labor charges involved. With my family of six, we had been living in a single hut that was too small to provide a kitchen, reading space, and also bed space. This transfer allowed us to put up a spacious one that after moving in, everyone is so pleased and comfortable inside. I also obtained a piece of furniture at KES15000 that includes two sets of a sofa and two beds that fitted well in the bedroom. My four children had been making repeated requests for new clothing, and the receipt of the transfer could not end well if we would have missed a chance to buy them some pairs. They are now happy and can now gladly showcase to their neighboring children who also have some new pairs. With the remaining amount, I managed to obtain foodstuff enough for the next two months.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a one roomed house where we cook and I sleep with my young son. My three daughters go to sleep at their grandmothers house because of lack of enough space. Receiving this money will mean my children will have a safe and comfortable place to stay. I will build a three-roomed timber house that will cost me KES 40,000.I do not own a cow also and I buy milk for use everyday of which sometimes we do not get for lack of money. I plan on buying two dairy cows at KES 20,000 each .This will be an investment that I project getting 20 litres of milk per day from it within 2 years time. This will earn me an average of KES 600 per day meaning I will have a stable source of income and will be in a position to cater for my family basic needs such as food, clothing and education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up early in the morning to get my children ready for school then I proceed to go look for casual work to do in the neighbouring villages. The happiest part of my day is in the evening when my children have something to eat after getting money from work done.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I used to be a motorcycle taxi driver for 8 years until I got chest problems due to cold and I was advised by the doctor to stop riding motorcycles. I had no option but to stay at home and life has become difficult since then because that was what I knew how to do best. Currently, I do not have any reliable source of income and I do casual jobs to get money to support my 4 children single -handedly who their mother left after we separated. This has been the biggest hardship I have faced in my life.
