"Lack of finances has been the biggest hardship. I moved from my previous farm a year ago because it was very dry and unproductive. For many years we lived there with my family I really struggled to meet my family's needs. Right now I'm still adapting to the new area as we find ways of earning income."

"My usual casual job is repairing motorcycles and every morning I go to a garage in nearest Chebunyo market for the job. I normally start it at 8am to 6 pm. My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am done with the work for the day and have earned wages to enable me buy food for my family."

"I would like to get out of my parent's house so that my other siblings can sleep comfortably. At the moment, we are sharing bedspace but if I vacate, they will have enough space to utilize."

"Food insecurity is the biggest hardship we have faced, from the KES 700 my husband gets from riding his motorcycle we spent KES 300 on food daily. This challenge escalated since the time I felt sick and was admitted in Tenwek hospital. We sold our cow in order to settle the hospital bill
which had accrued to KES 38000. This led to my family being food insecure due to a lack of milk ."

"I have desired to know how to ride a motorbike. Whenever I seek someone to train me, he tends to shy away because of my mental health. Considering that I will be receiving my monthly transfers, I plan to join a driving school where I can receive competent motorcycle training."

"The happiest part of my day is in the evening. I am a motorcycle taxi rider, riding for long distances taking clients to various destinations. I am therefore engaged from morning until late in the evening. Since the job itself is risky and tiresome, getting home safe and with some cash in the evening is the joy of my life."

"With my family of five, we had been working hard with my wife to ensure that we provide all that our children want in time. I had been operating a retail business alongside subsistence and livestock farming while my spouse has been ensuring that all our children are well-fed from the grocery business she has been running alongside our farming practices too. Enrolling with the GiveDirectly's program came as a boost as we knew things will get better once we received the transfer. I spent KES16000 as on obtaining a heifer as we needed an additional cow with potential abilities to produce more milk for our household use, and sell whenever there is any surplus. We also had to inject KES 18500 into our businesses -KES10000 to my retail shop, KES 3500 to the poultry project we had, and KES 5000 to my spouse's greengrocery. I am hopeful that this will help us realize a better and sustainable return from the investment. We also had to spend KES 3000 on equipping our three school-going kids who not only needed school equipments but also new outfits. We decided to reserve the remaining KES16000 as we have a plan to purchase a second-hand motorcycle that will be useful in both our businesses. It will facilitate easy access to the market for my wife and also will be useful in transporting stock from the shop I had been buying from."

"The main challenge that I am currently facing is the lack of money. Like I said earlier I want to built my own house for my children but due to the lack of money, I am unable to do that and I even have the plan to return to school but due to the same lack of money I haven't been able to go back to school."
