How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a new goal wanted to start a tailoring business. Since I am a tailor by profession I thought having a sewing machine would be much better since all the profits will all be mine. However, I have not been able to accomplish this dream and I am hopeful that soon I will achieve it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing so well in my village. The organization empowered every needy household and transformed them into better people. Most of us never had livestock, good houses, and our children had dropped out of school. All has changed now because all our heart desires were accomplished. This was a result of the freedom that we were given in regards to how we had wished to spend the cash.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying livestock more so a pair of oxen at KES 20000 and six goats at KES 21000. These will be reliable living assets that I can count on in case of any emergency. I opted for this livestock because the oxen will be of help, especially with my family activities. Also with the goats, once they increase in number, I will sell some and cater to any household need. To add to that, I cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my two children in primary school and cleared my college fees as well. I was pursuing a tailoring course and being ghee last semester I had no coin to fund that. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home, trying out some tailoring techniques on my sewing machine. At 9 a.m, I received a message informing me that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy as I had never received such a huge amount of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since receiving this transfer, I have a renewed hope in life. I have dreamt of owning a tailoring business for the longest time. However, because I am unemployed, I couldn't raise the college fees necessary for me to gain the knowledge that I need to successfully run a business. Once I received the cash transfer from GiveDirectly, I was able to pay the necessary fees to enrol in a tailoring course. I'm so glad that I am on course to achieving my biggest dream. I have also bought enough food for my family of four. We can now afford to have three meals a day as opposed to just two like we did before. I'm truly thankful for this donation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My biggest dream in life has been to own a tailoring business. I was unable to achieve this before because I did not have enough knowledge and skills. I am unemployed and was unable to raise fees to enrol in a college for the same. So I was happy to receive this transfer. I spent KES 39,000 on paying college fees for a tailoring course. I believe that this will equip me with the necessary skills to run a business, efficiently. I also acquired 3 goats worth KES 10,500. I hope to sell this later on when financial emergencies arise. Lastly, I spent KES 5,000 on the purchase of foodstuff, including flour, rice, beans and wheat. I needed to ensure that we had enough food for the household for all four family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means self employment and food security for me. I am planning to complete my tailoring course which will cost us 20,000 Kenyan shillings. I will use a total of 50,000 Kenyan shillings to start my own tailoring business. This includes buying sewing machines, clothes and rent the premises for the business. Due to how laborious land cultivation is in this area, we are also planning to use 30,000 to buy a pair of cows and 10,000 Kenyan shillings to buy an ox drawn plough. This will enable us prepare our land in good time and in the shortest time possible hence getting land produce of high quality and quantity.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is the evening. I am a tailor and it is in the evening that I get numerous clients. This makes me happy because I know I will get a reasonable amount of money as profit.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of money is the biggest hardship I have ever faced. Back in 2013, I joined a tailoring college. Due to lack of money, I dropped out of the school after the first year. I started working as a house help with the aim of getting money to rejoin my tailoring course. The money I was getting was not enough to cater for my personal needs and to save for my fees. Since then, I have been trying to do all I can to get money for me to go finish my course but I have not been successful. Currently, I am employed as a tailor though I lack the basics. This makes it very hard for me to get well paying clients.
