received a $437 second payment.
"When I received the second transfer, I first opted to buy some livestock as a security for the future. Livestock does multiply and they can be converted to monetary value when the need arises. Therefore, I bought one cow for $75 and three goats for $90. As of now two goats gave birth to twin calves each. After that, I looked at how the food prices had inflated and I opted to buy three sacks of maize at once to ensure food security at home. I spent $65 per sack. As of now, I am happy because I am thinking of other things apart from the head-breaking food issue. Initially, as a family, we used to go without food for at least two days a week. As of now, I am happy because my family has an access to food.
Since I am a mother of six school-going children, I used $226 to pay school fees for them. $176 went to one secondary school child while $50 went to the five primary school children. I took this step after they were sent home for school fees. Currently, I am happy that I was able to act quickly because I had the GiveDirectly cash. If I reflect, I would not have acted quickly the way I did if it were not for the transfers. This is because my only source of income was from selling firewood which was unreliable."

Ivynne
received a second payment.
"I have always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money to purchase it. I requested my neighbor to give me one of his dairy cows for some time until I purchase one. This enabled me to cut the daily cost that I used to incur on purchasing milk. I rely majority on small-scale farming, I plant maize and beans on my farm. These are mainly for consumption and sometimes I would sell the surplus to meet basic household items that we were missing. I had no other steady source of income to enable me to purchase a dairy cow. I spent $300 on purchasing a heifer, This has given me hope in that when it gives birth in the next few months I will get enough milk for my family. I will sell the surplus milk to earn some income to pay school fees for my children. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly this could have taken quite some time. I spent $21 on plowing my farm and purchasing seeds. I hope to get a good harvest since I was able to plant during the right season. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my family members."

received a $437 second payment.
"I spent $320 on purchasing a dairy cow, I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I am a motorcycle taxi operator and the money that I would get daily was for basic household needs. I had no extra money to invest in dairy keeping project. I would spend $5 per week on buying milk. This was so costly since I had no other steady source of income. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because this was the chance to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I no longer buy milk like before. My children get enough milk and they are so grateful for the support. This had given me peace of mind to do my work perfectly since I no longer worried about where to get the money for milk. I spent $100 on purchasing materials and building a small decent kitchen house. I used to own a small grass-thatched kitchen house but I know I have a decent and more spacious one. The rest of the money I spent on food and other household basic needs. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."

received a $452 second payment.
"I spent $450 on purchasing a dairy cow. This is because I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me since I did not have a steady source of income. I would spend $5 per week on milk. I rely on small-scale farming, I plant maize, beans and vegetables. These are mostly for consumption and I would sell extra to earn an income to pay school fees for my two children in secondary school and three in primary. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money to buy one. I would only struggle to pay the school fees and buy food for my children. Currently, I no longer buy milk and I can save the money that I would have used to meet other basic household items. GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dream and I am so grateful for the support. Besides that I spent $40 on purchasing hens, This will be my additional source of income since I will be selling the eggs to get an income. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and clothes for my children."

Angioneter
received a $437 second payment.
"In the coming year, I hope to be able to buy a dairy cow. Having bought a piece of land and successfully built a house in it, it is now my dream to buy a dairy cow that will help me feed my family and meet other needs of my family as well. I have already saved some money amounting to $150 and my target is to reach $300 before the end of this year. Reaching this target shall mean that I will be in position to buy a good dairy cow and make more income as well through the same of milk once it starts producing some."

Harrison
received a $452 initial payment.
"I spent my recent transfer to start livestock rearing by purchasing 2 indigenous cows for $300. One was a dairy cow that would supply the family with enough for use as well as sell some to earn a living. With the other being a bull, I intend to use it for the death ritual for my late wife who passed away 4 years ago. I had not been able to perform this important rite of passage according to our tradition due to lack of enough money. In addition, I used $30 to support the education of my granddaughter who is pursuing a nursing course at Kenya Medical College. Similarly, I cleared all the fee arrears for my 3 children who are in grade 6 and are about to do their final exam this month. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing enough food for the family 6."
