How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money to purchase it. I requested my neighbor to give me one of his dairy cows for some time until I purchase one. This enabled me to cut the daily cost that I used to incur on purchasing milk. I rely majority on small-scale farming, I plant maize and beans on my farm. These are mainly for consumption and sometimes I would sell the surplus to meet basic household items that we were missing. I had no other steady source of income to enable me to purchase a dairy cow. I spent $300 on purchasing a heifer, This has given me hope in that when it gives birth in the next few months I will get enough milk for my family. I will sell the surplus milk to earn some income to pay school fees for my children. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly this could have taken quite some time. I spent $21 on plowing my farm and purchasing seeds. I hope to get a good harvest since I was able to plant during the right season. The rest of the money I spent on food and clothes for my family members.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The registration was perfectly done and most of the people were so grateful. The training also was done well and most of the people invested the money wisely in different projects since the money was unconditional. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was at home and it was around 7:00 pm when I received money from GiveDirectly. I shared the news with my husband who was equally very happy to hear this. We required the money for his registration in school and this was very urgent and important for us. He woukd not have graduated from school without getting a certain amount for registration in school.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is in the investments that we made. The payment of school fees and the dairy cow that we bought were life changing. We normally rely on casual jobs to earn a living and we would have to wait a little longer to accumulate just enough money to do this. We have three children and the money that we normally get is just or barely enough to buy basic household needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 17000 to register for my husband in school and used another KES 20000 to buy a dairy cow( heifer) and the remaining amount was used to buy furniture. We made a decision to invest in all these since it was a priority spending areas for us. The money came at a time when my husband needed to pay a certain amount of money as registration fee before he could be allowed to graduate with a plumbing course. This money made his dream come true and we feel very much happy to have received the money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money means a lot to us as a family. I'm still in college paying my own school fees worth KES 21,000 per module. This is a struggle given that I don't have a stable job and at the same time providing for my family. We are impressed with Give Directly support because it means I won't struggle financially this module.Im also planning to use some of the money to buy a cow that will supply us with milk for consumption.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was offered government education loans to help me settle some school fees balance. This was in early April this year when I was about to seat for my exams. It was a relieve to us as a family given the high cost of living we are experiencing currently.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We are currently struggling to buy maize for consumption at KES 4000 per sack up from KES 2500. This has been attributed by droughts and maize diseases.Buying maize at that price without a stable job is a crisis.
