"When I was promised an unconditional transfer, I thought about investing the money in dairy farming. This is because I wanted something that would remind me of the wonderful support from GiveDirectly in the years to come and also to be a source of milk for our daily consumption. Therefore, upon receiving my second transfer, I used $180 to buy a dairy cow. Thereafter, I saved $100 on the village table banking for it to earn interest and for later use. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes for my family which comprises one child, my wife and I. So far, I have achieved a lot in a short period that I was not able to accomplish before due to financial constraints. I work as a masonry where I earn $3 daily on average, which is barely enough to cater to all our basic needs. I am forever grateful for the great milestone that I have accomplished in my life."

"The support from GiveDirectly has uplifted my living standards amazingly, I was able to accomplish my dream of owning a dairy cow in a short period. They introduced the program to us and explained the enrollment process and also gave us time to react. Throughout my interaction with the program and the field officers, I never saw things that needed to be corrected."

"First off, my house is in a very bad shape as you can see. It's too small that just a four by four bed with a metal box on the side is enough to completely fill it up. Again the roof is a flat one somehow too low that ends up making the whole house hotter than oven during the day. Still, because of the short roof its walls are also washed down with some parts of the roof leaking too. I plan to construct a new one when I get this money. It should be at least two roomed with a proper iron roof. This will cost around $600 , after which I will buy some goats and cows to also have my own domestic animals that I can always sell when I need money urgently to solve something."

"We do not have a cow of our own. We sold all the cattle that we had to meet the school fees of our children who were in various schools. It was a struggle that was insurmountable and we depleted a lot of resources that we were hardly left with any. We had to borrow a dairy cow from our relative just for milk production for consumption. It is against this backdrop that we intend to a dairy cow, we plan to use $400 to purchase a dairy cow and use the rest to pay the school fees for our son who is in college in Nairobi."

"Sometimes in August this year, our only cow calved and we were over the moon. It was quite an achievement for our household, we used to buy a liter of milk per day for $0.60 which is no longer the case. My boy,3 enjoys taking milk a lot and there are there is plenty and gives me joy when I feed him with the milk. At the moment we have enough for household consumption and we sell the surplus at $1.20 which helps us in purchasing other households' needs which has made life a bit better."

"I spent $220 of my second transfer on adding a heifer to my field, hoping that she will soon give birth and increase milk production for both my household use and surplus for sale. I currently have one lactating cow that produces barely enough milk for my household. With the addition of the breed, I hope to see an increase in production, which will provide an additional source of income through the sale of milk. I also paid $40 in school fees for my two primary school children, which covered the entire term, to ensure that they attended all classes at the end of the term. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on household goods such as food, toiletries, and new clothes for my family of five. I am grateful for the help that has so far brought my family a lot of transformation and future hope."

"I think investing in livestock would be the right step to make. Have a dairy cow that will supply us with milk and in addition sell the milk in the market. My husband Robert runs a butchery and I know with his help I can buy one or two cows at a fair price of $600. It will be fulfilling to earn some money on my own rather than depend on my husband for everything."

"At the moment, I am looking for a piece of land to buy for my children in the surrounding villages, where the cost of land is still lower than in our village, where an acre costs $4000. It has been difficult to get a piece, and prices have been rising due to high demand from new members moving in from other villages. I am hoping to relocate to a less expensive area where I can buy half an acre and practice subsistence farming to support my children. As soon as I get a piece, I will sell my four cows and use the proceeds to fully pay for the land."
