How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have so many dreams that I would wish to accomplish in the coming years, but the only hindrance is financing. Though, this does not stop me from being ambitious. If I happen to get cash in the future, I plan on starting a business that would help in boosting my finances
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support from GiveDirectly has uplifted my living standards amazingly, I was able to accomplish my dream of owning a dairy cow in a short period. They introduced the program to us and explained the enrollment process and also gave us time to react. Throughout my interaction with the program and the field officers, I never saw things that needed to be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Raising school fees for my son, who is at the university, has been an uphill task that I have been struggling with. This is because I depend on farming, which is no longer productive because of the climatic changes. My husband works as a driver, though only when it's available. Together, we have two children. Upon receiving my second transfer, I used $200 on paying school fees and upkeep for my Son which was the most pressing need at the most. Secondly, I purchased a dairy cow worth $350 to cut down on the cost of milk which was very expensive, especially during the drought season when one litre sells at $1. This had been a dream that I had wished to accomplish for a long time but this was not the case due to financial constraints as a result of school fees and responsibilities. GiveDirectly has impacted my life positively, thus I am forever grateful.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was at home and getting ready to prepare supper when I heard my phone ring. I had waited for this money for way too long and on learning that GiveDirectly had finally made good their promise of sending us the money, I could hardly contain myself. I jumped up and down in happiness at that particular moment as I gave thanks to God. I later called my husband who was still out there doing his casual jobs and he was very happy to receive such news. There was a lot we wanted to do with the money and getting it brought a lot of relief on our side.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the dairy cow that we bought. Once it calves, it will give us a break in terms of finances and I will no longer have to go out for long hours in a day looking for money especially for emergency spending like payment of rent and buying of food for my children who are in school. I would often get stressed up whenever I received a call from my daughter who is doing her college studies asking me to send her money to pay her rent. Such moments would be so tormenting to me since she would call and I do not have the money neither do I have a job that would enable me get the money. Receiving this money has brought reprieve on my side knowing better that better days lies ahead of us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used 30000 to buy a dairy cow and used another KES 10000 to pay school fees for a secondary school student, paid rent for one of my children worth KES 4000. Another KES 6000 was used to buy building materials while the remainder was utilized in purchasing food and clothes for my family members including my children. For a long time, we have endured the costly prices of milk since we did not own a dairy cow. We had been unable to buy the dairy since we were so preoccupied with payment of school fees for our children. The amount of money that we make from farming which is our main economic activity is hardly enough to allow us save. We feel happy that GiveDirectly came in handy to help is realize our dreams earlier than we had anticipated.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Give Directly money will mean a lot to me. I have been under medication for three years. I cannot get a child because of some complications. I spend about KES 4,000 a month for treatment. This means the money will help me get the child because lack of money have been affecting medication consistency that is required. The money will also help me educate my first born who is in University. I'm so happy that Give Directly has come at the right time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter was enrolled to University in the beginning of the year. I was so happy that the only hope I have in my life was bringing hope to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My medication is so expensive. When transport to specialist is included, I spend about KES 10,000 in a month. The hopelessness of not getting a child is made worst by lack of money.
