How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years, I would wish to grow my experience in construction work. To be a senior masonry would attract a good income, which would be a significant benefit. To ensure that I achieve this dream, I plan on learning new skills from my workmates and I believe that with passion, determination and hard work, I would achieve this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The support from GiveDirectly has generally uplifted the living standards of our people. During the compound ''baraza'', they well trained us on what the program entailed and where the funds came from and all the stages that they would take us through, starting from the census stages. In my opinion, I did not encounter any challenges or things that needed to be corrected.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I was promised an unconditional transfer, I thought about investing the money in dairy farming. This is because I wanted something that would remind me of the wonderful support from GiveDirectly in the years to come and also to be a source of milk for our daily consumption. Therefore, upon receiving my second transfer, I used $180 to buy a dairy cow. Thereafter, I saved $100 on the village table banking for it to earn interest and for later use. Lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs and clothes for my family which comprises one child, my wife and I. So far, I have achieved a lot in a short period that I was not able to accomplish before due to financial constraints. I work as a masonry where I earn $3 daily on average, which is barely enough to cater to all our basic needs. I am forever grateful for the great milestone that I have accomplished in my life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited when I first received the transfer as it brought hope of completing the house I had started constructing 7 months ago but I could not because I ran out of cash. It was around 7:00 PM while I was on my way home from a nearby shopping center. I could not wait to get home so that I could share the news with my spouse.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the completion of both the main house and a kitchen. We now have a decent house with a separate kitchen. Our households are not stained with smoke emitted from the firewood. It has been hard living in the previous house during rainy seasons but at the moment we have a warm and dry house with appealing furniture. We also look good and decent in our clothes which earn us respect. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for this support that has brought a lot of changes in our household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living in a small old structure was frustrating. I had a round 2 meters hut with a leaking roof which also acted as a kitchen. I do construction work but they are not reliable. 7 months ago I started to construct both a kitchen and the main house with the little savings I had. Unfortunately, I ran out of cash while they were halfway. I, therefore, spent KES 25000 on 3 doors, 4 windows, timber, and paid labor for the completion of both the kitchen and the main house. We now have a spacious house and a separate kitchen. KES 12000 I used to purchase decent clothes for my spouse, son, and me. KES 10000 I spent on a new table and enough foodstuffs to take my household for some period. KES 7500 we saved in a monthly savings and loaning group within our village.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money relates to accomplished projects. I am a casual laborer relying on house construction which has become hard to get. When I get one, the average wage I get on a day is KES 300. Additionally, I have a young family of 3 and the child is yet to start her education. Having other household needs to cater to, I have been unable to finish constructing the two houses; a kitchen and the main house due to the low income. I am grateful that I will soon accomplish my projects using the transfer and the remaining cash will be used to purchase a dairy cow. I will spend the first KES 20,000 to bring them into completion and purchase a dairy cow using the rest. I feel elated that Give Directly's entry into our village is timely.
What is the happiest part of your day?
None of my family members has fallen sick in the last 6 months and this has brought joy to our lives. Seeing every member of the household being healthy and happy makes me proud. This has given me the strength to work extra hard to fend for them and cater to their needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Stable sources of income are the challenge we are currently facing. Relying on house construction as the only source of income has not been easy yet we are facing hard economic times. I started constructing a simple house 7 years ago and I have been unable to accomplish it because of my unstable income. Construction work in our village is hard to get because most people are poor and therefore have nothing to construct. I feel agitated that I have been unable to raise enough cash to complete the construction that I started some years back.
