Emily
received a $468 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I now live a more peaceful life especially due to the investments that I made with the first transfer. When I look at my completely renovated house, I find peace in my heart. I was left poor and helpless when I lost my husband long time a go and I had to figure out how I could raise money to support my family single handedly. I feel happy that somehow I was able to do this but of course I had to part with some of the assets that I initially owned. The kind of job that has been putting food on my table is that of selling water and firewood to a nearby centre. The income that I often get here is hardly enough to enable me make ends meet for my family. I thank GiveDirectly fir enabling me accomplish things that would otherwise have remained as just dreams for a longer time."

Zachariah
received a $280 fourth payment.
"Have a decent house has been my goal before recieving this transfer. My house has been in a bad condition. Despite it being in that condition,I have not been able to improve it because of the lack of money. The roof no longer holds the rain waters as before. I have wished to complete the construction of my new house before the rainy season but there were a little short coming on the part of me. With my last transfer I am now going to do the finishing touches on my new house and move in."

George
received a $280 fourth payment.
"The new goal I have set before receiving this transfer is to buy one small Ice box freezer to start.selling cold drinking water.
No one is selling cold water in this village.
Many people leave the community just to buy cold drinking water in the nearby biggest town. Since birth, this is the first of it kind to receive huge money from NGO freed . Thanks to Givedirectly for empowering me financially. I believe that with my planned to invest in to business, I will be able to generate more money to pay my son school fees."

Philomon
received a $469 initial payment.
"I have lived in a one-roomed house which leaks for over ten years. My source of income comes from my small farm and sometimes am forced to work any casual jobs within the village, including working on my neighbor’s farm or fetching water. Life has been a struggle, as most of the time, I cannot provide for my wife. After carefully checking the list of things we wanted to do, we both agreed to spend the entire amount to build a two-roomed house. The house would be spacious, and finally, the leaking of the roof would not be a problem."

Benaline
received a $469 initial payment.
"The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. I managed to finally fulfill my wish of building another decent house for my family. The house is still under construction but I am hoping that I will be able to finish it soon with the little money that I still have. Having built an iron-roofed house, I have also managed to collect clean rainwater for my household use just like some of my neighbors. I am also happy because I managed to send my child to school having cleared the whole academic term school fees. My children are happy because they have new clothes to wear and enough food to eat. The maize prices have at the moment gone up, a 2-kg tin is being sold at KES 200 and I don't think I would have managed to afford to buy enough for them. For this, I am so much grateful to GiveDirectly for their big help. May God bless you."

Irene
received a $280 fourth payment.
"No. My previous goal was renovating and furnishing my house. I couldn't achieve my plans due to lack of money. I was sleeping on the floor because the mattress that I was sleeping on got damaged. I used to put fufu in the water, prepare it and take it to the market and sell before providing for I and my grandchildren. My house was uncompleted. It wasn't plaster and there was no floor. However, after got enrolled on GiveDirectly program and started receiving my transfers,I immediately plaster my entire house and put floor to live a comfortable life. I used my previous transfers to buy 8 bags of cement, titles and put inside bathroom in my house and paid contractors that did the job."

Miriam
received a $469 initial payment.
"I got married in the year 2020 and moved in with my husband. After a month, I conceived and my husband left me like he was going to work only not to return. As days went by and my nights became long in hope of him coming back, I was stuck in my nightmare, which was my reality. I went back home and my family helped me secure a home to start afresh with a child. My challenge was providing for my child through casual jobs, like farming and fetching water and firewood for villagers. The first thing I did with my cash transfer was to buy a cow which cost me KES 30,000 and two sheep for KES 7500. Food was a challenge and had to spend KES 4000 on a bag of maize that would last me for the next 3 months. I also bought clothes for my baby and some sweaters for both of us because we are approaching the cold season with KES 3000. I saved the entire cash for my day-to-day expenses."

Zawadi
received a $469 initial payment.
"My husband is a palm wine tapper, and most of the time he has provided just enough for our basic needs like food because my children are still young and not yet enrolled in school. Most times, the money provided is enough for the day and it all depends on the customers and the season. The inconsistency of the flow of income has limited me to have some things I have longed for, like furnishing the house and having livestock of my own. Upon receiving the cash, I used KES 12,100 and bought a bed, mattress, and small suitcase for my children’s clothes. With the current water shortage, I also bought a tank for KES 3500. The previous night, we discussed our finances, and he advised me to buy food that would last us a few months because business was on the low. I used KES 11,000 to buy a 50kg bag of maize and rice. I bought two goats for KES 7000 in case we needed to sell them for financial support in the future. With all said and done, as a woman, I lived up to my dream to buy the kitchen utensils I have always wanted and bought my family new clothes with KES 9000. I have saved the rest of the money to be used in our daily expenditures, like buying vegetables and water for household consumption."

Miriam
received an initial payment.
"Due to my husband's epileptic condition, he cannot seek employment and I am the one who is left to be the sole provider of the family. To make ends meet, I farm for other people and also sell firewood. which gives me a daily earning of around KES 100 and KES 200 respectively. So, when I got the funds from give directly, I used KES 20000 to install a solar panel in my home as we were living in darkness making it difficult to operate at night. I also bought some materials to plaster my house at KES 15,000. Finally, to curb the water problem in my area, I bought a 15000-liter tank to help collect the rainwater. This has saved me so much energy as I would often be forced to walk more than two kilometers just to get water."
