"Give Directly does a fantastic job of giving cash transfer to the neediest in the society including the physically vulnerable individuals. The money has enabled me to achieve goals that were previously unattainable due to a lack of funds. I am excited to own livestock such as goats and chickens, courtesy of the cash transfers. I cannot think of anything Give Directly does poorly."

Caroline
received an initial payment.
"I spent KES 26000 on my first transfer to pay school fees for my son who is in his second year, two in grades four and five respectively. They have been staying home for a couple of days and I was worried that they might end up failing to sit for their exam which was around the corner. Additionally, I bought poultry feed (for my chickens) and I am glad they are now growing faster and gaining weight. Also, I bought a battery for my solar panel since the original one was no longer functioning. To add to that, I bought eleven bags of cement at KES 7500 and timber at KES 8000. This was for the renovation of my house because it was unstable. With the remaining cash, I bought food for my family."

Dehyatee
received a second payment.
"I have decided to build my own house. I am presently living in my son's house since my house broke down two years ago. I had the plan of building a new house but never had money to do so due to lack of money. I am a farmer and that has been my means of survival. And I also wanted to do business,so I started selling frozen chicken when I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly. Receiving this financial assistance from GiveDirectly means a lot to me. It will enable me to build my house and add my business up."

Nasibu
received a $26 sixth payment.
"My husband relies on charcoal production to meet the needs of the family, such as food and clothing. Because of the product's low demand, he hardly makes any sales, and if he does, his earnings are not more than KES 2,000 in a month. It is difficult to provide food for our family of eight on a daily basis with this amount. In fact, the day before the transfer, the family had run out of food. That is why I prioritized obtaining KES 1,000 worth of maize flour. In addition, I spent KES 1,500 on new clothes for my six children and myself. Our old clothes were worn and torn from repeated use, and I was afraid we would get sick from the cold. I used the remaining funds to purchase a hen. My goal is to allow it to breed and grow the flock. In this manner, I will be able to raise funds in the future when I sell the chickens to meet the needs of my family.

Marcyline
received an initial payment.
"I spent part of the first transfer to buy building materials such as iron sheets at KES 24700, nails at KES 1000, building poles at KES 15000 and timber at KES 6000. This was purposefully for the construction of a new house because the initial one was so small and in critical condition. It could not fit all my four family members which forced my two children to spend their nights at their grandmother's house which was in our village. Therefore building a better house would mean a lot to us, especially for our safety. To add to that I purchased two chickens which I am currently keeping on my homestead. Later on, I cleared fees of KES 2000 for my grade two son and I am glad he is now in school without any disturbances. With the remaining amount of money, I had to buy food for my family and other household items."

Kabibi
received a second payment.
"My husband and I depend on charcoal burning to fulfill the needs of our family, such as food and school fees. Due to the product's low demand, we hardly sell anything, which leaves us with an income of at most KES 1,400 every two weeks. It is difficult to provide food daily with things. As a matter of fact, our household had run out of food the day before the transfers. So, I prioritized purchasing food worth KES 1,000, which has lasted us to this day. In addition, I paid KES 1,000 in primary school fees for my four children who had missed two days of school due to unpaid fees. For the previous month, I had been suffering from anemia, which weakened my body and limited my ability to move or work. I decided to spend the KES 600 I received from the transfer on a blood builder to help with my recovery. I am glad my body is getting stronger by the day. I used the remaining funds to purchase a hen and chicken feed. My plan is to let it reproduce so that I can sell the chickens to raise funds for my needs in the future."

Koech
received a $464 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is the poultry project that I have since started. This will be an alternative source of income for me and family and will cushion me during times that I do not get any contracts with my plumbing job. I have already built the poultry house and just waiting for the second transfer to be able to buy chicken and start off the project."

"Prior to the transfer, I had always hoped to own a chicken but lacked the funds to do so. I am glad because the transfer provided an excellent opportunity for me to obtain my first hens. Thanks to Give Directly, I am now the proud owner of two chickens. When these birds multiply, I will be able to easily sell them to raise funds for my household bills. "
