How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to start a new business selling fresh fruits and vegetables in my village. After conducting some research, I discovered that this business is very profitable because people have been trekking to the town centre to purchase these products. It is therefore evident that they are in high demand. Once I will be able to acquire capital to open this business, I believe that it will uplift my living standard since I am now jobless. I will be able to support my spouse fully to make the ends meet.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in the entire process since the day they enrolled on the final stage. All went well because they enrolled each household freely and fairly which has even strengthened peace and cohesion among ourselves in the village. I, therefore, can't point out anything that they need to introduce in the next village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent almost $500 of my recent transfer on buying iron sheets, building poles, threads, nails, timber and the needed materials. I had intended to build a new house because the current one was very small, besides it was not able to condition. I was even worried that it may collapse anytime which would be a big blow to the entire household. My three children have been sleeping at my friend's houses which I felt was not right because all children deserve parental care and love. At some point, I felt that I had failed my children. This situation used to frustrate me a lot and to make it worse, there were no hopes that I would build a better house anytime soon. I have been relying on my spouse for all the basic needs which he could hardly afford to provide due to the nature of his job. I now feel grateful to GiveDirectly for finally restoring my dignity and joy in my family. I now shelter all my children under one roof since it the spacious enough. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food and other household items for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like the other day when I saw a message notification around 7:30 in the morning, I was even thinking about what my day will look like. This is I confirmed that I had received the first cash transfers that I was promised during the enrolment period. I was overjoyed with happiness and even said a special prayer for this miracle since I was positive that I would finally build a decent house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have been married for over five years now and my life has been full of sorrows. For all that long, I have been sheltering under a very small house which was grass thatched. It could barely accommodate all my four family members. Therefore my children had to sleep at their grandmother's house which was still not spacious enough. As a mother, this has been stressing me a lot but I did not have any option but to endure the situation. Sometimes my children used to fall sick as a result of where they slept. My spouse and I have been trying all we could to put up a decent house but we couldn't afford to purchase the necessary materials. Therefore after acquiring our transfers, building a specious permanent house had to be a priority. I am so grateful that I now sleep under one roof with my kids which has been my dream. They are now joyous and healthier which has even resulted in a good performance in their studies. Therefore this makes the biggest diff in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the first transfer to buy building materials such as iron sheets at KES 24700, nails at KES 1000, building poles at KES 15000 and timber at KES 6000. This was purposefully for the construction of a new house because the initial one was so small and in critical condition. It could not fit all my four family members which forced my two children to spend their nights at their grandmother's house which was in our village. Therefore building a better house would mean a lot to us, especially for our safety. To add to that I purchased two chickens which I am currently keeping on my homestead. Later on, I cleared fees of KES 2000 for my grade two son and I am glad he is now in school without any disturbances. With the remaining amount of money, I had to buy food for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The major goal is to build a spacious shelter for my household. I am planning to construct a two-roomed house which cost me approximately 70000. This is because the one I have is not sufficient for my family of 4 members. I am forced to share a room with my daughter who is 5 years old which does not provide me with privacy. Besides, when I host visitors I have to ask neighbors to accommodate them. The remaining amount will help me purchase 5 indigenous goats which can survive in dry weather conditions within our area as well as other basic needs such as food and stationery for my children. Once I reach this target, I will be happy and fulfilled in my heart because of the adequate home for my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last two weeks, I gave birth to my secondborn baby whom I named after my mother-in-law. This has brought me joy and happiness because it strengthens the bond between my husband's family and me as well as the increased number of members of my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a housewife depending on my spouse who works as a casual(construction). The job is hard to get and in a week he can get KES 1000. The money is not enough for all the necessities of a family of 4 members. In a day, I require KES 300 to be able to feed my household. Due to this, it is difficult to raise sufficient money to build a big house. Sometimes we spend the whole day without food, something that makes me feel unlucky in life.
