Kashutu
received a $25 sixth payment.
"The moment I realized that I had received the transaction from the organization, I was so excited especially because I was almost on the verge of starvation. That is why I after I withdrew the transfer I ended up using KES 1,500 and purchased five packets of maize flour, two kilograms of beans and also drinking water since it was scarce. I also ended up using KES 1,000 by buying timber because I have been stacking up building material with each transfer that I have receiving in order to renovate my kitchen since it is almost collapsing. Eventually I was left with balance of KES 500 which I ended up using to settle a hospital bill for my son who had fallen ill."

"The new goal that I have is to purchase proper bedding for the family. This is because we are currently sleeping on the floor with old rags as bedding which are not comfortable and always experience backbone pains after waking up. Also, I plan to purchase a water tank and install gutters around my house to collect and store rainwater for the family's consumption. At the moment there is a drought in our area and finding clean water has been a great challenge for us"

Amani
received a $440 second payment.
"For many years now,my area has been afflicted by severe drought and water shortage, which has led to loss of livestock and crops. For this reason,I bought five goats at a cost of 16,000 kshs, which do very well in our area and I can easily resell when the need arises. I also bought a small water tank at 1,500 kshs to store water in severe water shortages. I then spent 14,000 kshs to buy two sacks of maize and rice for my family’s daily food consumption. With the previous transfers, I had built a small shop by the road with the purpose of renting it out but it was not complete yet. With the remaining amount, I finished roofing the shop and I hope it will start bringing in income soon. I was delighted to receive the second transfer, as it helped me achieve most of my goals."

Benjamin
received a second payment.
"I finished my tertiary studies in education four years ago. By the time I finished my studies, I had acquired a total debt of $964 in school fee arrears. Our family's bad financial situation was the reason for amassing such massive debt. My mother sold all of our possessions, including animals, but we still couldn't pay off the loan. As a result, my academic papers were withheld by the institution until I paid the arrears in full. Since then, I've done odd tasks like building people's houses, fetching water, and briefly teaching students at neighboring primary schools. I was able to accumulate enough money to pay off a significant portion of my debt. When I received my second transfer, I used it to pay off the little amount of debt so that I could acquire my academic certifications. I am confident that after I get the certifications, I will be able to find a decent paying job. This would assist alleviate the financial hardship I am now experiencing as a result of extreme poverty."

Jumaa
received a $25 second payment.
"When I got the tenth transfer, I used $8 to purchase two chickens so that I also start keeping because I had none. Since they have a short breeding period, I am optimistic about having several chickens soon. Thereafter, I saved the remaining $22 for commercial farming. I am waiting for the rainy season to plant some watermelons. I decided to do so because I tried it sometimes back and it did well hence I opted to take this investment route. I am happy that I can purchase watermelon seeds through the enablement of GiveDirectly."
