"I was happy when I heard that GiveDirectly were coming to hold compound meetings with us since we have heard a lot about their work. Receiving this money will mean a lot to me. First, I do have one cow that I was given by my son to milk because I sold the ones I had and some land to pay school fees for my son in secondary school. I intend to use $300 to buy a cow for milk to be used at home, use $100 to complete paying my son's school fees, another $100 to be used to complete my house and use $50 to stock maize since our place is not always productive."

"Lack of school fees is the biggest hardship I have ever faced in my life. I was forced to drop out of school at form two since my father who was a casual laborer couldn't afford to pay fee for the seven of us forcing me to get married at my tender age."

"Receiving this money means self independence for our house hold. My wife's biggest aspiration is to become a tailor. I will use 20,000 Kenyan shillings to pay school fees for my wife to join a tailoring school. I will then spend 30,000 Kenyan shillings to start a tailoring business for her. I am convinced that by doing all this, my wife will be self reliant. As for me, I will use 40,000 Kenyan shillings to buy a second hand motorcycle. Being a roofer, it is always hard for me to move swiftly to my places of work. The motorcycle will be a big boost because I will be able to reach my clients in the shortest time possible. I will also use 10,000 Kenyan shillings to repair my leaking roof. The remaining 10,000 shillings will go into our savings Incase of any emergency that may arise."

"We have been living in a single-roomed house with a leaking grass-thatched roof since we have never afforded to build a better one. Precisely, we have been struggling to raise our school fees (mine and that of my husband). Hence, receiving this money means that our lives shall dramatically improve because we shall build a better house with an iron sheet roof. As such, our self-esteem and comfort shall improve. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the timely intervention."

"I spent $220 to purchase building materials comprising of 20 iron sheet, building poles, timber and nails this was for the construction of a modern Iron roofed house for the family. Furthermore, I spend $200 to educate my sixth child who is in a boarding secondary school by clearing the fees arrears of $100 and paying 100 for first term. The one I had earlier was old and was about to collapse. In addition, I bought 3 goats for $50 each this is a long term investment for the children, I will sell them to pay school fees once they multiply."

"For a long time, I have been paying my children school fees in form of materials such as firewood and sacks of maize harvested from my farm. Since 2015 we have faced a great challenge because we have been unable to harvest enough maize due to drought, weather changes, and diseases. I have also fallen a lot of trees to supply firewood to schools as school fees. At the moment my compound is almost deserted due to cutting down of trees more often. Therefore receiving this money will enable me to pay a full-year school fee amounting to $500 for my son who is currently at Kericho Tea secondary school. I have also established a shop in the nearby center but I have not completed nor furnished it. Therefore I shall use approximately $100 to complete the shop, make shelves and paint it. The remaining $500 I shall use as capital for my business."

"I love education since I have witnessed from my neighbors how it can transform lives to be better and this is why I have struggled to educate all my six children. It has been hard financially to pay their school fees since we majorly depend on casual jobs and subsistence farming. Since I prioritized my children's education, I was left living in a small house for quite along. When I received the cash transfer, I will spend KES100000 to build a more decent, semi-permanent house. This will assure me ample decent palace to enjoy my old age in. I want to spend KES10000 on my household's daily basic needs mainly food and clothing."

"Recieving this money means I will buy 3 dairy cows and pay school fees for my children. I am a single mother of two children who are both schooling in secondary, we leave in a dry area and the that we depend on doesn't do well, so I have to go an extra mile of doing other casual jobs for me and my children to survive. I plan to spend 600 dollars in buying this two dairy cows and use the remaining in paying for school fees."

"Receiving this money to me means my children will continue going to school. My Son joined form one this year and I was not able to provide all that he needed when he went to school in August,2021 due to financial constraints.I am the sole provider in my family and I do casual jobs to earn a living which is not enough to cater for all the family basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing and education.I plan on paying a year school fees of Ksh 30,000 and other 20,000 on school levies, books and uniform for my son in secondary and other children in primary school. Owning a 4 roomed house too is my ambition and I will spend ksh 40,000 to buy 40 pieces of iron sheets, building materials and labour cost."
