"Daily I have been buying milk for home consumption costing around 3,000 shillings every month. This is costly for me because I depend on masonry as a source of income where by sometimes on a good month I earn around 10,000 shillings. This is suppose now meet family basic needs and school fees for my children. My desire has been to purchase a dairy cow to end this high cost of expenditures and as well as to add my source of income from its produce. God willing if I received this money I know now my family will own a daily cow worth 30,000 shillings and use the rest of the money on renovating my house and other expenditures."

"I dropped out of school in 2017 due to lack of school fees. I am a second born son from a polygamous family. My father had 4 wives of which my mother was the last wife and she was younger among the four wives, she was married at the time my father was old and tired . Due to that my mother had to be independent in everything this led me to cease going to school due to huge school arrears. As a breadwinner of the family I was forced to engage in casual jobs at nearby town of which I earn 200 Kenya shillings in a day, this is insufficient to meet daily basic need of 7. Receiving this money therefore, will be big help to me. I plan to use 40,000 Kenya shillings to construct my house because the one that i am in now is small given that I recently got married and my family will expand. I also plan to use 20000 Kenya shillings to clear school fees for my siblings because I don't want them to be like me, 15000 to purchase goats this will be for sale since they procreates so fast. The rest of the money, I plan to open a business of selling vegetables because it does well in this area."

"I have been living in a house that at the same time I use as a kitchen. This has not been good for our health since the smoke never gives us restful nights, also it exposes us to the risk of tuberculosis. Receiving this money means good health to my family because I intend to spend a better portion of my transfers ($500) to construct a decent house that will be spacious enough to accommodate even my visitors. On the other hand, I will invest part of the second transfer ($300) to buy goats that will act as my long-term investment project. The remaining amount will help me to cater to my very basic needs like food and paying school fees for my children."

"Receiving this money means getting a new house. This is because the house that I am living in is too small to accommodate my six children. We are forced to spend in the same room which makes it difficult to accommodate a visitor for even a night. I am really struggling meeting the basic needs of my children since I depend on charcoal burning business which is illegal but since it is the only way I can survive on, I have no choice. Besides my husband went missing for the last ten years after he was taken by a friend who also has never been seen around since then. This has made me to be the mother and father figure for my children and the responsibility is too much to handle. I intend to use the first cash transfer to build a two bedroom house that will cost $500. I will then use the remaining cash transfer to pay my children school fees and buy food for my family."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to educate my children. My husband refused to have our children proceed with their education because he believes that we are too poor to raise school fees. He has abandoned us to live on our on and ran away to a town. I have been doing casual jobs that brings in about $60 a month. However, this amount cannot cover the household expenses as well as school fees for my three children in secondary schools. I plan to spend approximately $400 to pay school fees when I get money from GiveDirectly.I will then improve my home by building a small kitchen to replace this grass thatched one. It is already too old and leaks whenever it rains."

I also build a poultry house. I am yet to start a poultry keeping project to earn an income by selling eggs. The rest of the money I paid school fees for my niece who is in secondary school. "I spent half of the transfer on building a shop. This will enable me to cut the cost of paying rent on the shop that I have rented. I will be in a position to save some money for other purposes. I also paid school fees for my children. My children will no longer be sent home to collect the school fees. I bought clothes and food for the family. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I have two other dairy cows and this has been my source of income. We depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. Sometimes we do casual jobs in the village, The amount of money that we get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including paying school fees for my children. When I received the transfer, we agreed with my spouse to buy one dairy cow. Currently we have enough milk for consumption and we sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to pay the school fees for our children in various schools. Our children are no longer sent home to collect the school fees and this has improved their performance compared to the previous terms. We have also devoted much of our time on dairy farming project. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own dairy cow and be in a position to live a better life."

"As a single mother of two, bringing up my children has never been that easier as I have survived on casual labor to raise school fees and ensuring a healthy upbringing. Currently, the elder one is in grade seven while the other one is in grade four. This to me is a sign that they are soon graduating from primary school, and their school fees will be a bit higher. On receiving the first transfer, I spent a huge portion on obtaining two bullocks one at $135, and the other at $170. I already had one and adding it puts me in a better position to comfortably pay school fees in the future when I sell. With the remaining amount, I saw it good to also add two other sheep to the flock at $87. I spent the last coin from my account on adding foodstuff to our stores as our farms are not doing that well at the moment."
