How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a heifer. I do casual jobs in the village and the amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including saving some to buy a heifer. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on this amazing dairy project. I have hope that that when it reproduced I will get enough milk for consumption and cut the daily cost of buying milk. I will also sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other household items. GiveDirectly has enabled me own a dairy cow. I am planning to keep on improving this breed to get the best quality .I am so grateful for the support from GiveDirectly to own a dairy cow which could have taken quite some time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community buy dairy cows and to build better houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on buying three goats and a heifer. This is an investment because I will sell them when the reproduce to pay school fees for my children. I also build a poultry house. I am yet to start a poultry keeping project to earn an income by selling eggs. The rest of the money I paid school fees for my niece who is in secondary school. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so excited to receive the transfer that morning as I had waited for the last three days thinking that it would have been sent a day or two earlier. Everyone in the village had also been anticipating this as the talks over it in the shopping center were so high. I thanked God for being part of the project and prayed that He still guides me in spending it since I needed the best out of it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the joy in our family having invested much of the received transfer on livestock. The basics which I used to buy only when I had money are currently available ranging from milk to eggs produced by both the cow and the chickens I invested the transfer in. I am so grateful that we can eat healthy again without working in casual labor but within our farms.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the transfer, I spent 41500KES on livestock. I divided this among a lactating cow, heifer, and also chickens that I am currently rearing. This is an investment I have always wished for were it not for the scarce resources. Currently, I am no longer buying milk but milking from the cow I bought. This has in a great way reduced the cost of living as I am no longer spending on milk but instead using the initially allocated amount to cover other household needs. I spent the remaining on buying clothing and foodstuff for my kids.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means we shall enjoy a higher standard of living as a family. This is because I will start my dream business of trading on second-hand clothes. There exists a ready market for apparel in a nearby shopping center. As such, we shall have significant income that will be used to buy more food and other basic stuff. Also, we may gain some funds for developmental purposes. I think it's our time of blessings, thanks be to God.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a housewife and subsistence farmer. As such, I usually handle all the household chores and some farming tasks from dawn to late afternoon. Hence, the happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am taking some rest after a tiresome day. This allows my body to regain energy in readiness for the next day's activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship we have faced as a family is the absence of capital for starting my dream business of trading on second-hand clothes. We have no resources to sell or use as collateral for securing some loan. Also, our subsistence farming could just sustain us, leaving us with no savings. As such, we are leading a substandard lifestyle as a family because we have no reliable source of income.
