How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a new goal which was basically to own livestock more so the goats. I have desired to have them because they reproduce very fast and they mature within a short period. Having them in my compound would have reduced the burden of paying schools fees and fending for my family's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to me, GiveDirectly did a great job in my entire village. It uplifted the living standards of many needy people in my region. Most of us now have better houses which are considered to be a very huge store in our lives because we never expected it to happen anytime soon. Some of them had developed into poverty to the extent of sheltering under trees and corridors.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge fraction of my second transfer on buying iron sheets and building poles at around KES 40000. This was for the construction of a new house because the initial one had collapsed a few weeks ago before being enrolled. I had to construct a temporary hut and my children were forced to seek shelter from friends' house which was very far. As a parent, this has been stressing me since the said friends were immoral. I am happy that for now, I am sheltering all my ten children under one roof without having to worry about their safety and the harsh climate. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff that would take us for a couple of days.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 in the morning when I was just relaxing with my family when a message notification popped in. Since I couldn't read on my own, I requested my daughter to read out the contents of the two notifications from my mobile phone. Upon checking, she started smiling, and before she could utter a word I knew that there was some good news. She later told me that I had received the first transfer that I had patiently been waiting for. I was overwhelmed with happiness, I remember I started praying and thanking God for the gift.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a decent semi-permanent house is the biggest difference in my daily life that I can proudly talk of. It has been my desire to at least own a better house for quite a long time but becasue of my financial status, I couldnt afford to purchase the necessary materials needed. I have been married for over twenty years and it has been tough all along. I have been jobless and my spouse has been the family's breadwinner ad he has been relying on odd jobs to provide for our daily meals. However, with the twelve family members, it was not easy for him to fulfill all our basic needs including a better shelter. As a result, we have been sheltering in a small, old grass-thatched hut that was already in a wanting condition that it even have collapsed anytime. During this period, I used to experience lots of challenges like my properties getting damaged, my children were also forced to seek a place to sleep at my neighbors' and relatives' houses. This has been stressing me becasue at times I felt like my children have become a burden to them. I m now a happy mother because I am finally able to live with all my children under one roof without having to worry about the insecurities and even the rains.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge fraction of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as buiding poles which cost KES 10000, twenty pieces of iron sheets at KES 16000, nails, timber, and the labor charge of KES 7000. I had to prioritize this because I had intended to build a new house since the initials one was grass thatched, very small, and almost collapsing. Some of my family members had to seek shelter from their friends in the nearby villages which are is about 6KM away from my homestead. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it in buying foodstuffs for my family and other household items like plastic chairs.
