"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build two better and spacious houses. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. Whenever I have extra harvest I sell to earn an income to pay the school fees for my children in various schools. I didn't had any savings to buy the building material. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on building a better house for my family. Currently we live in a spacious house. Whenever I have visitors I do not shy to welcome them because I have a spacious rooms. My children are so happy because they have their own rooms where they can do assignment without any disturbance. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a piece of land. I do small scale farming and sometimes do casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family. I had no extra money to save to buy a piece of land. When I received the second transfer I felt so happy because I knew I would be able to buy a land. Currently I own a piece of land, I have plough and ready to do horticulture farming. I am planning to plant beans and potatoes. I will get enough food for the family after the harvest. I will also sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other household items. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own a piece of land. This could have taken quite some time to get it. I have hope that I will save some money to buy another piece of land. This has motivated me to work harder and ensure that my family get all the needs. I will also be able to pay school fees for my children."

"I spent my first transfer on purchasing a heifer at the cost of 230 dollars. I will get enough milk for my family when it reproduced in the future. I also purchased a ox and a goat at the cost of 220 dollars. This is the best investment because I will sell in case of any emergency or to pay school fees for my children. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get annually is only for our consumption and does not last us till the next harvesting season. In addition, There're some months in a year that we have to buy milk daily. With unstable source of income, we're at times forced to skip some meals like lunch or take porridge in the evening as our supper. When I received my transfer, I decided to spend $500 to purchase two heifers. I will be selling milk and use the income on food and to cater for my children's school fees. I used the remaining $25 to purchase new school uniforms for my children. I decided on this since the ones they had were old and worn out."

"Receiving this money will help me build another house which is more spacious. The current one is small and as my family grows, I will need more space moreso because of privacy and accommodating visitors. My budget for the house is approximately 30,000 Kenya Shillings. I will also set aside 6,000 Kenya Shillings to buy 2 goats which I will be grazing here at home. This will help me pay school fees for my children and take care of emergencies here at home which are sometimes a challenge."

"I have been brought up by a single parent. That is my father alone. He did not have any job such that he could not afford to pay school fees for me. I used to be on and off of school because of school fees. That made me to stop schooling at class five. That is the biggest hardship I faced in life."

"Receiving this money means taking my child to college. My firstborn completed secondary school level 2 years ago and scored an average grade. Her ambition since she was young has been to become a teacher, but due to financial challenges, this dream has never been fulfilled. To achieve this, I intend to spend 60,000 shillings to pay for the whole year so that she can study with ease. I believe that later she will be employed and support us. Other than that, I am planning to spend the remaining transfer to practice livestock keeping with the hope that they are going to multiple and sell them in case I fail to raise school fees."

"Receiving this money means a reliable source for my household. Currently, I am a charcoal vendor, a very tiresome job, and earn little income of $60 per month. This amount cannot fully sustain the household needs. I am planning to spend $400 on my first transfer to start a livestock business. With this business, I am assured of a profit of $50 per week. The remaining amount of my first transfer will help me to cater to household needs like food. My second transfer will help me to clear school fees for my children in secondary school so that they cannot be sent back home to collect school fees, this will improve their performance in school."

"When I received my transfer, I spent $300 to build a more decent kitchen for my family. The one we had was old and the roof was always leaking. Because of this, I usually had to prepare meals so early in order to avoid being rained on and we usually ended up taking cold meals. Also, I spent $50 to pay school fees for my son and $40 to buy some school books that were needed since he was joining high school. Using the remaining $ 150, I bought two sacks of maize and other household necessities."
