How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having achieved the plans I had with both transfers, my new goal is to add stock to my existing business. Am currently selling cereals, i.e beans and maize which needs adequate stocking but with my current financial struggles am unable to improve my profit margin.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly does well by improving the living standards of the poverty alleviated homesteads in the society. Most homes in my village have a new face from new iron-roofed houses, dairy cows, and most important adequate food which was unachievable before. I do have any complaints.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receipt of the second transfer, I saw the need to purchase a heifer at a cost of Kshs.20,000.This will add us more milk for consumption once it has calved. I also chose to obtain two calves one at Kshs.12,000 and the other one at Kshs.10,000.With the two additional calves, I can sell whenever I have urgent issues which need financial attention. With the remaining amount, I bought clothes for my household members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 8am. We were taking breakfast with my friend. She received a message and when she checked it, it was a message confirming that she has received the transfer. My phone was in charging that time. I immediately get my phone. When I checked it I couldn't believe my eyes. I have never received such amount of money before. I felt so happy, we immediately celebrated with my family members and my friends. I knew from that point that I I'll be able to buy a dairy cows. I am so happy because I have always wished to own livestock. I hope to improve this dairy farming to another level. Get new breeds in the near future and I will be able to get enough milk and sell the surplus to earn an income.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer and a oxen. I do small scale farming and casual jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and only for consumption. I had no other source of income to enable me buy the livestock. I buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. When I received the transfer I felt so happy because GiveDirectly enabled me to own a dairy cow. Currently I have a heifer and a oxen. When my heifer reproduce in the next future I will be able to get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus at the market to earn an income. The oxen I will use on ploughing my farm. This will ease my work and enable me to dig a bigger farm. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard. It had enable me own livestock project which could have taken quite some time to get it. I have that I will improve this dairy farming and devote all my time on doing this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my first transfer on purchasing a heifer at the cost of 230 dollars. I will get enough milk for my family when it reproduced in the future. I also purchased a ox and a goat at the cost of 220 dollars. This is the best investment because I will sell in case of any emergency or to pay school fees for my children. The rest of the money I bought food and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I currently live in a very small house with my two children. My greatest need at the moment is to build a bigger house for my family and also to buy a dairy cow so that my children can get proper nutrition. Receiving this money is a big boost for me because I will be able to use my transfers to build a house costing approximately KSH. 20,000. The remaining amounts will be spent in buying 2 calves costing approximately KSH 10,000 each.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happiest in the morning because I have woken up healthy and ready to go and work as a casual laborer in a nearby farm. I am happy because I know that at the end of the day, I will have some money to feed my 2 children.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finances is my biggest worry. I really want to build a bigger and better house because my first born is now 5 years old and my second born is 3 years old. These children will soon want to have their privacy which is not available in my current house. I have not been able to fulfil this need because I rely on casual labor in a farm that is 10 kilometres away and I earn KSH 200 per day. This amount is only enough to cater for our food. I am now hopeful that I will be able to accomplish my dream once I receive my transfers.
