"It was around 6pm in the evening and I was still at work carrying passengers, as I work as a motorcycle taxi driver, when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy when I got the money because I knew clearly that the plans I had all along, which was getting my own brand new motorcycle and quit employment., would be fulfilled. We had been told that the main aim of this money was to eliminate poverty and I knew that getting my own motorcycle would just do that. I couldn't afford to buy myself the motorcycle because the income which I used to earn from the one I was employed to operate was not sufficient enough even though I kept on saving a little by little knowing that one day I will be able to raise enough to get myself a brand new motorcycle. Therefore, I was so happy because GiveDirectly made my dream come true." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I spent most of my recent transfer money on building a house that we had started building before, but we had left it pending for about a year due to a lack of money. We built a big permanent house and hence it has costed us a lot of building materials. We bought 32 iron sheets at KES 930 per iron sheet. We also bought trees that we cut them for timber for constructing the house. We decided to construct another house because the ones that we are currently living in are made of mud. Getting mud for mudding the houses has become a big challenge since it is no longer easily available. We hence usually buy it. I have a small business selling vegetables and milk while my husband is doing the motorcycle taxi business. The money that we get from our hustles most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, some household needs, and paying for the merry-go-round contributions in the self-help groups that we have joined. We also paid KES 8000 as a deposit for the doors so that the carpenter could make them, and another KES 3200 we spent on buying a bag of maize for our consumption. We are hence grateful to GiveDirectly for everything."

"It was a few minutes to 4 pm when I heard a message alert on my phone and at the same time, the client I was carrying informed me that there were rumors that GiveDirectly had started sending the promised money to people. As my norm, I did not bother with the message since I do not like using my phone while driving since I am a motorcycle rider. I became so happy the moment I read its contents after dropping my client at his destination. Since my spouse does not have a phone that I would have used to communicate with her, I continued with my work jovially as I waited patiently till I get home so that I would share the good news with my family."
