"Receiving this money means that I will be able to involve my self in large scale farming, buy a cow worth $405 from which my family will be able to get milk for consumption, then use $539 to acquire land for both farming and staying since this place Shilayi is not safe.
Last year in 2022 my gardens did not yield much I will also buy fertilizer worth $81 so that this year I can be able to get much yields.
This money means a lot to us as a family because development will be made possible that when Give Directly Officers return to visit us after the 1st installment, they will find progress and sure be pleased because well be able to sustain ourselves."

"I plan to buy a plot worth USD1081 in Mbale District in Bugonkho which is a flat area suitable for settlement. I also plan to secure a cow of USD405 which will in the long run multiply and enable me to build a good house in my plot and also pay school fees for children.
The balance of USD405 will support me to start up a coffee business which will help us to raise daily income to cater for basic needs and emergencies."

Kazungu
received a $27 sixth payment.
"I have ten children, one of whom is married and residing with her husband. My parents' financial instability prevented me from attending school when I was young, so I was forced to stay at home and take care of our goats and cows. Whenever I see people of my age speaking English fluently I really envy them and tell myself that my children will not be like me. The first thing that usually comes to my mind when I get money is what, how and when to improve my children's lives. The moment I received my transfers, I spent $34 on my two children who were joining grade seven and it really made me happy. I spent $26 to go get them brand new uniforms because they were joining a new class and it made them so happy and the remaining amount of $8 I bought them ten exercise books to be able to write all the notes and assignments given to them by their class teacher."

"I currently do not have a good job and life was really hard before GiveDirectly came into the bigger picture. I used to sell and burn charcoal and at times I would sell nothing and in the process we would go days without food. I am planning to save enough money and ensure I buy chicken and when they hatch, I sell them and buy goats that will make me profit. The moment I make enough profit, I will make sure I open a big shop for my beloved wife to keep my family moving. I will also buy more goats and cows for myself and sell them. When we both work, we will be able to give our family the kind of life they deserve."

"I am hoping that very soon I will be able to purchase a dairy cow. I am positive that once I own it, I will benefit from the milk that it will produce daily. I plan to sell to the local dairy shops and local restaurants in the neighboring town and earn some cash. I will therefore save the money specifically for my children's school fees. I will, however, not have to strain as much as I have before."

Benard
received a $416 second payment.
"My family of three consists of two adults and one young child. R raising our kid and ensuring that all of his basic needs are met can be difficult at times. I am grateful to my parents for always sharing the available milk from their cows for free. During this time, I considered purchasing a dairy cow to produce milk when I could not get a liter from my parents. With the huge financial obligations, I had been trying to save from my small maize business and was glad to top up the second transfer with some of my savings, which I used to buy two dairy cows for $665. Even though they were unable to produce enough milk instantly after purchase, I am relieved that they will soon calve and produce enough milk for my household, some for my parents, and surplus for sale. I spent the first transfer on sheep that I believe will grow and whose multiplication will be useful when I sell the offspring in the future."

"When I first received the transfer, I had a single cow and could occasionally buy extra milk for my family of three when we had visitors from the neighborhood or during the dry seasons. The cost of milk has always been high, and I thought I could cut costs by bringing in an additional dairy cow with which I will alternate breeding to ensure a constant supply of milk. I spent $300 from the second transfer to buy a cow, which has been providing us with extra liters of milk. I also spent $150 on three goats that I intend to breed, and when they multiply, I will always sell them to meet any emergency needs as well as to begin any new project in the future. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on household goods, including food, to supplement the small produce we had obtained from our farms and the earnings from casual labor."

Edna
received a $416 second payment.
"I have a lot of goals for the coming year, but my first priority is to buy a dairy cow so that I can stop spending money on milk for my family of three. Because the bulls have been so adaptable, low-maintenance, and fast-growing, I hope to sell one in August for around $300, which will be enough to buy a dairy cow. I also hope to pay my two children's school fees on time in the coming terms because I will be selling the other bull."

Zawadi
received a $27 fourteenth payment.
"In the next one year and beyond, I would want to have my own livestock. I had started saving little amount on a monthly basis and I want to ensure that I have enough money to buy goats and with time trade them for cows, and during the cultivation period, the cows would be of great help to me as I would no longer struggle to look for money to pay out those cultivating my land."
