How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We had been living in a single hut that we had built before the first transfer, with my spouse and our firstborn child. Because the family was still young, I prioritized spending on things other than building a new house because the current one served as both a kitchen and a living room. During this time, I was actively participating in the village's informal savings group with the other 19 members. Making a deposit of at least $3 every two weeks has been feasible, and I am confident that the accumulated share will support the construction of a new house when my turn to receive arrives. I am glad I have been able to consistently save biweekly, and I am hoping that my new goal of building a new house will come true.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
respect and patience, and they were always ready to help us understand the project by efficiently answering all of our questions. Their humility encouraged us to freely interact with them, allowing us to comprehend the entire enrollment process. The process was efficient, and it could be useful in other villages that are still waiting for GiveDirectly's support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I first received the transfer, I had a single cow and could occasionally buy extra milk for my family of three when we had visitors from the neighborhood or during the dry seasons. The cost of milk has always been high, and I thought I could cut costs by bringing in an additional dairy cow with which I will alternate breeding to ensure a constant supply of milk. I spent $300 from the second transfer to buy a cow, which has been providing us with extra liters of milk. I also spent $150 on three goats that I intend to breed, and when they multiply, I will always sell them to meet any emergency needs as well as to begin any new project in the future. In addition, I spent the remaining funds on household goods, including food, to supplement the small produce we had obtained from our farms and the earnings from casual labor.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 6 am and I was still sleeping. I heard my phone ringing but I did not check it since I thought it was one of those messages that my network service provider usually sends. It was until 7 am when I was taking tea that I called upon my wife who is my helper to come to check for me the new SMS since I do not know how to read. She checked it and she told me the wonderful news that the SMS was saying that we had received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us. I was so happy on hearing this and we celebrated together giving thanks to God. We now knew that the plans we were going to fulfill the plans that we had already made.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because with having bought the cow, we now have our source of milk. We hence no longer go out so early in the morning to look for milk for preparing tea.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 30000 of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We bought the cow because we didn't have one. We hence lacked a source of milk. We depended on the two cups of milk that we were supplied with, from home which was only enough to prepare the morning tea. At times when the few goats that we have, give birth, we milk them and we get some for our consumption. It has always been our wish to own a cow but we didn't have the money to buy one. I usually do casual work of farming to earn a living. My wife on the other end usually does the business of buying and selling eggs. The money that I get is not much, I usually use it to buy food and essential household items. My wife usually uses what she gets in paying school fees for our three children and buying school uniforms for them. Other than the above, we also spent KES 23000 on buying five more goats to add to the few that we had. We bought them so that they can help us in the future when they will reproduce and multiply in number. We can sell a kid whenever we are faced with an emergency. I had KES 8000 with me which I added to the transfer amount. So with the remaining money which was about KES 10000, I used it on paying off debt. I had borrowed the money to use in treating one of my children who had fallen I'll and unfortunately, he died. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for helping us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In our community, a family without a cow is perceived to be poor and less industrious. This is something that has disturbed me for a while because I have never afforded to buy one. So, receiving this money is a sigh of relief for me since I will spend KES 30000 on purchasing a dairy cow. Also, I will invest the remaining amount by purchasing other livestock (especially goats and poultry).
What is the happiest part of your day?
Getting my wife admitted to a local technical training institute to pursue a course in plumbing has made me happy. This is because I am an illiterate person who depends solely on casual jobs to make ends meet. So, I am hopeful that in the future she (my wife) will secure a white-collar job, hence, drawing more income to our family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
About three months ago, we lost our only child who was about six months old (sigh). He succumbed to chest complications after suffering for a short period. As a family, we are still mourning the loss and pray that God gives us another child. Precisely, this is the worst challenge we are facing as a young family.
