"The biggest change in my life right now is that I'm not required to go great distances to gather water and firewood, which was becoming incredibly tiresome and time-consuming. In contrast to how things were previously, I now have a tiny business that may generate cash for me to purchase a few necessities for the house, such as food and other modest items."

"Since I already have my piece of land, I hope to build a house to settle in with my family of 3. I will gladly utilize the profits from the grocery business to expand the business and also aid in the construction. From this, my family will have a house to settle in peacefully and thus be independent and away from my parents."

"Since the last few months have been so difficult for me, I was delighted to receive transfers from Give Directly. Communities in my neighborhood were fighting, so I was forced to flee for my safety, leaving everything behind and starting again with nothing. Life was just too difficult for my family since we had neither had a place to sleep, food nor money for education."

Godfrey received a $151 initial payment.
"I was able to fence an acre and a half in anticipation of this season's planting when I got this initial transfer. The money I get paid as a matatu driver is not at all enough, therefore my objective is to produce maize so that I can feed my family when a drought strikes again and sell some of it to create an income."

"After receiving the second installment from GiveDirectly, I aimed to finalize the construction of a house that I began when I got the first transfer. As a family of three, we had been living in a single room that doubled as both a kitchen and a living space. To complete the construction, I spent $300 on purchasing essential materials, including 29 iron sheets, 8 bags of cement, and nails. I also paid for the labor charges during the construction period. With the remaining funds, I purchased some food items and saved the rest for any unforeseen circumstances in the future. I am thankful for the assistance provided by GiveDirectly and anticipate doing more with the final transfer."

"Upon receiving the funds from GiveDirectly, my goal was to construct a new house for my form two son. My desire was to provide him with a space of his own where he could study and have privacy after school, as we had always shared a room. The construction cost me $370, which covered the purchase of materials such as iron sheets, metallic poles, and a wooden door. Witnessing my son's happiness when he saw his new room made the effort worthwhile. I also spent $25 on purchasing dry maize grains and beans, which have served as a source of food for my family of three. Furthermore, I used $28 of the transfer to acquire an additional goat, adding to my herd of 11. I plan to breed and multiply them, which will help generate income to pay for my two children's future school fees. Finally, I spent the remaining funds on bedding to ensure that my son had comfortable sleeping arrangements."

"I mentioned earlier that I am making a monthly savings of $20 to my savings group. I have 5 grown children with my two eldest being 14 and 12. I moved them to their grandmother when they were around 10 because culturally I cannot live with my grown children in the same house. I have wanted to build them a house so they do not have to stay at their grandmother's house. I see this goal being achieved this year through these transfers. I would like to build a two-roomed house that my other children can transition into when they all grow. I am anticipating using the first round to get the poles for the structure while also savings towards buying the more pricey iron sheets."

"In our culture, when you are older, you are not allowed to live in your parent's house. I moved out of my parents' house quite a while ago and I have been living with my brother. I had desired to get a house of my own but with my small earnings from selling charcoal, there was much hope of achieving this until GD came to us. I was so excited and in August last year, I started setting money aside to use for this building. I would save as low as $15 to ensure that I had enough to start up on the project and in March this year I started construction. In January and March, I set aside my entire transfer of $34 while in February I set aside a part of it $20. I used $14 in February to ensure my family was fed."

"It has been my dream to study Orthopedics and trauma at the college level and when I received my form four results that I had gotten a c- I knew I could pursue this dream. My parents are not very stable financially as my father is a shopkeeper and my mother is a housewife. I knew I could not burden them with the hefty school fees amounts seeing that a number of us are still in school. I decided to start the business to raise cash that I could finally spend in paying my school fees to study at college. I sell the chicken at $7.5 and make a profit of between $3 to $4 once the service charges are removed. I have a steady market for my produce now and I hope to explore this further by increasing my flock. I also see myself at the end of the year having enough savings to start school and I can sustain the school fees from the business as it grows. I will be so happy if I can join college and study Orthopedics and trauma as it's something ever on my mind."

"I live in a two-roomed house with my co-wife. We live peacefully together. However, our roof is old and has been leaking which has proven a problem now that it's raining. I would like to build a similar mud house with an iron roof. It is not cheap and seeing that business is not good I plan to use GD transfers to achieve this by saving. I save $20 monthly and although I have not begun building with the amount I am setting aside I see a possibility of my dreams becoming a reality with time."
