Richard
received a $537 initial payment.
"I was around 5.00 am in the morning when I received a message and I decided to check it as I thought that maybe it was someone who needed my help. Upon seeing the content of the message, I could not believe my eyes and I asked my wife to see it and confirm if it was true. After my wife checking my Mp-Pesa balance and confirming that it was true, I was filled with happiness and even after going back to sleep, we could not catch some sleep. We then decided to pray and sing some praise songs at a low tone in order to avoid disturbing our neighbors."

Godwin
received a $195 initial payment.
"Before GiveDirectly came to Mathare, I used to do some casual work for different people and get paid at the end of the day. The pay I was getting was little and could not sustain me. When I received my first transfers, I used them in buying two drilling machines so that I could use them to employ myself. I also decided to use part of my transfers to pay school fees for my siblings as they had a lot of arrears which I did not want them to be carried over to this year. Since I did not have enough decent clothes, I used the remaining amount to purchase some of them."

Santa
received a $537 initial payment.
"For more than a year my husband had been hired as a tuk-tuk rider which had been the source of our family upkeep. although he had that job, complains had never ceased since he was never satisfied with the kind of pay he was receiving (one could say it was peanuts). it has been our prayer that we would own our one inn fututre and that future seemed to have come. many thingsssssss have changed in our life but owning a motorcycle is now the biggest difference. you can not miss a coin in our pockest and our children are currently feeding well and all this is because of the productive asset which to our family."

Kadzo
received a $537 initial payment.
"The biggest difference is that I now own my own oxen, which will enable me to hire others at a fee which means an income to me and boost my farming practice. Also, I will be able to increase my acreage for the cultivated land to get more yields as well as converting the uncultivated land to be productive again. To me, owning this pair of oxen is the biggest difference in my daily life."

Sylvester
received a $537 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is owning a dairy cow because I had none. I am now certain of getting milk very soon and this simply means that, I will not be using 50 KES to buy milk every day which is a norm currently."

Sharon
received a $22 eighth payment.
"In the next six months, I expected my life to have changed as far as asset ownership is concerned. Owning a cow is a measure of wealth in my community and so by having one, I will count myself to have risen a step higher."

Martha
received a $537 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the ability to raise school for my child with a lot of ease. I am so happy that I was able to let my child smoothly proceed to form four without any fee issue. It has always been a big problem for my husband and I to raise school fee for our children since I always stay at home taking care of the disabled grandchild. My husband on the other hand, through his tailoring business, works hard to raise some income for the family basic needs which hardly pays for the children's school fee."
