Lucy
received a $199 initial payment.
"My phone had been off because of low battery on that day that the transfers came in. We did not have power the previous night until the following day at around 9:00 AM; which was also the material day that the transfers came in. I charged my phone when power came back at around 9:00 AM and when I switched it on, I saw the Mpesa message. I was so excited and in that moment I believed that the truly the transfers were real. I was also relieved and happy because I knew that I would have some money to keep me going, as after I delivered my child, I could not operate my salon. I feel Give Directly was just God sent."

Cherotich
received a $23 twelfth payment.
"In the next 6 months, I will have hopefully cleared school fees for my children. One of three of my children in secondary school will be sitting for their final year examinations at the end of the year. I would really love to clear her school fees soon enough so that she gets ample time to study as she prepares for her final exam. Seeing her home whenever she is sent for school fees really breaks my heart since it will affect her academic performance. If all goes well and her fees are cleared I will be a happy mother as I am certain of good grades."

Shadrack
received a $23 twelfth payment.
"In the next six months, I will have bought over 6 goats and I am planning to sell them at about KES 4000 each. From this, I will get money that is enough to buy a dairy cow which as soon as it calves we will get milk for my family's consumption and the extra for sale. I also joined a savings group of 10 people where we contribute KES 1500 monthly out of the transfers. In the sixth month, these savings will have matured and I am going to spend them as capital to start a business dealing in cows. I have done this business before and I am certain of high returns that will help me meet my family's needs more easily."

"My expectation for the near future is to first finish building the house that stalled from lack of funds. This will allow us live in a more comfortable and clean house. I also want to ensure that we do lack food by ensuring that I improve on my farming."
