"My life is currently different from the way it would have been had I not received the transfers in that my life has improved because I have been able to meet most of the family's needs without much struggle. This is because, through the GD transfers, I have been able to sustain my family's needs for two months without any other source of income. Thanks to GD for coming at the right time!"

"I do not have a house in my rural home which is so embarrassing and worrying at the same time. I have been a laughing stock for some time now about this since most of my peers who are jobless have families and well-furnished houses. People wonder what I have been doing in the city all this time. I therefore, have a new goal of ensuring that my business does well then later use the money to construct a house."

"My life has changed because through this transfer, I was able to repossess my farm land which I had used as security for the loan. Currently, I'm clearing it and plan to plant cassava on large scale for home consumption. Previously, I farmed on small scale for only home consumption."

Lilian
received a $49 eighth payment.
"I have been selling clothes for some time now. It is a good hustle that can sustain someone. Mine was doing well but since it was the only source of income I could squander the profits and at times I was left with very little for bringing a new stock. I didn't have enough stock for a while so when GiveDirectly started sending me the transfers, I usually use part of it to boost the business. A bigger chunk of money goes to the business because it is the main source of income and ones it is well established it will help me achieve other bigger goals. In addition to this I also buy food using the money. It usually comes in handy especially on days that I didn't sell anything at all."

"Receiving this money means we shall be able to buy oxen and an ox plough that will support in farming.
Many times we delay to open up fields for farming and this effects the harvest.
We also hope to buy household items using this same money.

"The biggest hardship that I am faced with is lack of money.
I do not have an income generating activity that would support the family.
The piece of land that is available for me to farm in is too small to accommodate my plans and yet part of the harvest has to be sold in order that all other needs of the family are met.
This has some times led to food shortage in my household. "

Cyprian
received a $464 initial payment.
"My life is much different in that I have cleared tuition which was bothering me alot. My son is the happiest after I cleared that debt.
More so, I was able to start up the construction of a one roomed house which is at the ring beam level.
Previously, I was living in an old dilapidated thatched house which was hard to maintain."

Mary
received a $49 eighth payment.
"I relied on casual work previously which wasn't reliable and at the same time, I used to earn very little from it that couldn't sustain my family. I, therefore, used the previous transfers to start up a business and since then I have been boosting it with the transfers that I receive currently. I am sure with time it will have picked and be able to run without boosting it using the monthly transfers. I'm happy I now have an additional source of income and I can comfortably meet my needs."
