"The transfer has enabled me to get my driving license since I did not have any. It has been a year since I completed my driving course. I am happy that at least I am eligible to work as a driver now. I also began a chicken rearing project at home. I am expecting that through this project, I will be able to sell them in the near future and raise sufficient capital to venture into other business opportunities. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I would not have fulfilled this at my own cost."

"Receiving this money means a better and less labour intensive alternative source of livelihood for me. For more than 30 years, I have been tapping palm wine, a local brew. The work is very tiring as it involves alot of physical activity such as climbing the coconut trees some of which are very tall. As I am getting old now, the work is becoming harder by the day because my body can not handle the intensity. With my transfers, I plan to set up a shop and earn income from it. I prefer this because it will not require a lot of labour and my sons will be there to help because it will be a family venture. "

"I am a small business owner. I have been operating a maize business for close to a year now. Upon receiving my first transfer I plan to invest a huge chunk of it to improve my business by restocking it. Profits accrued from this business will cater for a weekly contribution to a savings group(SACCO) of which I am a member. "

"As a single mother, all the responsibilities in the family are on me.I have a child in college, one in primary school and one in secondary school. They need school fees, food and clothing.I have to shoulder all these on my own despite the fact that I do not have any income except for the little that my small piece of land can produce;which is hardly enough to eat and sell as well. This struggle is the biggest hardship I have faced"

"Given the fact that it is very difficult to get grass, my life has greatly changed because using these transfers, I was able to build a permanent house and get relieved from the burden of looking for the already scarce grass and all the time leaking roof in case of rains. My home now looks very beautiful and I am a happy man."

"A good house for my children means a lot to me. Currently, my household has ten members but all my children spend their nights to my neighbor's house something that makes me feel ashamed. Considering my security job which pays me at most five thousand shillings per month, I have never been able to construct a structure for them because of the many responsibilities I have for the family. When I receive my transfers from GiveDirectly, my plan is to build a nice house for my children and this will restore my happiness that I have longed for. In addition to this, I will spend the other transfer on buying livestock especially goats for rearing. This will change my livelihood for the better, a transition that I have wished in my life. Therefore, this is basically what receiving this money means to me."

"I expect to have built a new house by then as I would have saved and bought the building materials. I also ventured into livestock rearing as I bought livestock to help in the generation of income for the family. This will be the main source of income for the family."

"I have three children, all of them are girls. In our culture, male children are a pride and joy of their fathers. My husband has always pestered me about this. After my third child,I fell ill and when I visited several hospitals,I was told that I had a growth that made it impossible to carry another pregnancy. The various hospital visits cost my spouse and I a lot of money and we had to even sell our livestock to pay for treatment as well as paying for our children's school fees. This has left us in poverty. This is the biggest hardship I have faced"
