Dzendere
received a $538 initial payment.
"Before the coming of GiveDirectly in my life, my children have been staying home because of the huge school fees balances. Since we are ten wives and I am the fifth one, our spouse was old and jobless. I had to struggle on my own. It was so difficult for me because I had to strain and make sure my Children get food and as well as taking then to school. It reached a point, my elder daughter had to quit school so that he can help me in meeting the family's basic needs. Life was so tough, the little I was earning from the casual jobs, I had to share among my eight children who are schooling and it was not enough. They were always sent home to collect school fees, and this resulted in poor performance since they were missing a lot. Having cleared their huge fee balances, it has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. They are now studying without any disturbances, and I don't have to struggle like before. My wish is always to see them getting better education together with their future generation."

"Food insecurity is the biggest hardship in my life that I have ever faced. I am a subsistence farmer who depends on traditional means of farming like the use of a hoe. This method is so strenuous but because I have no other option, I am forced to rely on it since hiring an oxen means paying a fee of Ksh2000 per acre and this is so impossible to me. In most cases, my farm produce is very low which usually sustains me for 2 months. I am now happy to learn that, I will own an oxen once I receive the transfers from GiveDirectly."

"It is every woman's desire to get social and financial support from her husband but this has never been the case to me since the death of my husband 3 years ago. At the moment, I am a desperate woman with no reliable source of income to depend on and this forced me to dwell on charcoal burning as my hope for living. This job is very tiresome and its income is inconsistent especially when you get unfaithful buyers. Many times, we skip our meals and also my children have been sent out of school due to a lack of fees. Therefore, I consider the financial crisis as my biggest hardship."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now happy because the financial support from GD has enabled me to own some goats something that I had longed for but could not achieve. I envision more income in the near future which will give me an opportunity to pursue my dream of owning a dairy cow."

Riziki
received a $538 initial payment.
"Having a dairy cow and the goats has really changed my life. This has been my long-time dream but due to my low financial status, I could not afford to buy one. I am a widow and I have been taking care of my mother. The moment my spouse passed on, I was forced to come back home since everyone neglected me including my inlaws. This is when everything changed. I felt the best option was to come back home and take care of my old age mother. Life has been tough but the moment I received the first transfers and bought livestock, everything changed. I now get milk for my mum and I and also sell the remaining few liters. This is now my main source of income. With the few goats that I bought, I will start a business of selling the offspring at the local markets. I am so much grateful to Give Directly because I can now do some of the things I couldn't have done when I a few months before they came into my life."

Saumu
received a $538 initial payment.
"Having cows has really changed my life. I settled in buying them for various reasons. First, my children are still young, none has started going to school yet. I am hoping by the time they attain the age of schooling the cows will have multiplied. I will have started doing other businesses as a result of their products. First, I will be getting plenty of milk from the two dairy cows and I am planning to supply them to our local market and save the money for my children's future studies. Secondly, with the pair of oxen, they will help me in ploughing my farm and this means the level of food production shall also increase compared to when I used to till my fam by myself. I will also hire them for my neighbors at a fee which will earn me more money that will help me in settling my family needs. I will also have a means of taking care of emergencies without taking loans."

Joyce
received a $520 second payment.
"My life is different from how it was if I would have never received the transfer in that, I have accomplished some of the goals that have brought peace in my heat. I love the way my compound is fenced. Maybe I could not have managed to fence it to date. I also bought a calf that I had sold due to financial constraints. A least I have brought it back to the mother. This simply means that my investment have increased."

Caren
received a $538 initial payment.
"My life has greatly changed since I received my first transfer. I practice mixed farming to earn a living and support my family. It is always my wish to improve this to enable me to earn more income to meet the ever-rising family needs. Expanding my farming has been a dream that would not have been realized if it was not for GiveDitrectly. Before GiveDirectly came for enrolment, I used to stay at home most of the time so that I would be looking after my livestock and poultry so that it would not invade my crops. This was tiring and a waste of time that I could have spent in other areas. Being able to fence my compound is the biggest difference in my daily life. Due to this, I can always go anywhere without worrying that my chicken and livestock will destroy my crops."
