"Inadequate income is my biggest hardship. I currently rely on crop farming in order to raise income for paying school fees and medical bills but it is not reliable."

Francis
received a $536 initial payment.
"We had been expecting to receive the money on the night of the date we had been promised by the officers, but it did not come so we stopped thinking about it. The following day when I was busy going on with my daily duties, I heard my neighbours confirming that they had received their share, so I went to confirm because the phone was in the house. On confirmation,I realized it had been sent. It was such a joyous and big moment for me because I knew that I would finally realize my dreams of buying the cows that I had longed to have for a long time."

Brenda
received a $536 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I can now eat well. For the past two years, we have not been getting good harvests. This had therefore forced us food in small manageable amounts. This is quite expensive in the long run. The transfers enabled me to buy food in bulk which is way cheaper and efficient. In addition to that, I also built a new house. Knowing that I will soon move to this new house gives me joy. The current house had started leaking and it would occasionally wet our bedding. In such rainy seasons, we would spend sleepless nights that greatly affected our day to day activities and our health in general."

Tabu
received a $536 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building, nails, and timber. This was purposely for the construction of a new house. The previous one was a small hut with some grass thatched roof. I was always worried whenever it could rain. We had to seek shelter from my neighbors and friends which was not right. I also started a business of a kiosk and Is now doing so well. I am so glad because I am now earning a living from the little profit that I am acquiring from the kiosk. The remaining amount of money I am using it in buying some household items that I was lacking and foodstuffs."

Jackline
received a $518 second payment.
"Having a roof over my head is one of the biggest differences in my life. Using the transfer, I built a nice house and left the old one that had been leaking during the rainy season. Furthermore, this is more comfortable because I own it, unlike the one I had occupied after my brother. Without GIveDirectly, I would not have been able to own a home."

"Our family got evicted from our communal land over 10 years ago and that is the last time I remember owning a house. Since then I have not been able to build a another and our life has been a living hell. We live in a structure that is not even fit for chicken and it keeps on collapsing every now and then. I use a tree next to my structure as a store for my belongings. My children sleep in their grandmother's house while my husband and I sleep in the cold every night. This transfer has come to save me this pain because I will achieve my dream of owning a house once again."

"Receiving this money means a better shelter for my family. The motive behind this desire is the fact that I live in a single roomed that is also damaged. It is this very small structure that serves as bedroom and kitchen. Due to its size, it is very uncomfortable to live in since it gets extremely hot and smokey especially after cooking. I tried to build a better one last year but I stopped halfway due to lack of money. This made it collapse and I have to start afresh."

"My life is different because, before the transfers, most of my neighbors knew that my children were never going to be dropouts. But after receiving the transfers, I have ensured that my son who was through with primary has joined high school, and two who were to join campus have also joined even though late I believe it better late than never."
