"We used to buy milk when we could afford and stay without when we could not. When I received the GiveDirectly transfers, I bought a cow that I am milking right now and my joy is that we no longer buy milk and we can enjoy a 'milky' cup of tea everyday. I also built a kitchen since the one I had was grass thatched and very old. Right now I enjoy preparing food in my new kitchen since it is new and clean."

"I used to have traditional cows only but right now I bought a grade cow which can produce enough milk for us. We used to sell goats and heifers to take my ailing husband to hospital but when we received the transfer, I was able to pay off the hospital bill that we had in hospital and we have been able to take him for regular checkups without fail."

"I had to fence out my compound by buying fencing posts and a barbed wire since every time I plant maize, my neighbour's cows could stray easily and graze on my maize which reduced my produce. I also bought a cow which is about to calf and this way, I will be able to milk my own cow and no longer buy milk as before which was very strenuous. I bought food for my family and beautiful clothes for my children."

"I spent part of my transfer on buying a cow. I resolved to buy the cow because in the near future it will help me as it reproduces and increase in number. I will be getting milk to sell thus earning an income. My son had completed his course but his certificate was being held due to fee arrears I had not cleared. Thus I took KES 9000 to clear the fees for my son to be given his certificate. This will enable him to look for employment with his certificates. I also renovated my house which was in a state of collapsing due to the many cracks and its roof dilapidated. I bought some iron sheets and nails and building poles to rebuild the house. I also paid for the labour cost."

"Before the coming of GiveDirectly I was sleeping on the floor using rags of used clothes and old mats. I was not able to buy new beddings since my financial status is not good. When I received my first transfer, I bought a new mattress and a bed and replaced the old rags and mats. I am now sleeping comfortably on my new beddings, which makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life."

"I had started a project of building a permanent house but I could not finish it due to lack of financial resources. When I received this transfer, I spent it on buying the remaining materials such as cement and sand to finish plastering the house. I also purchased two metallic doors at KES 16500 , windows and fixed them. I also paid for the mason for his job. In addition to this, I also bought two mattresses at KES 12500 to replace the old beddings I have been using. At least we have a nice place to sleep on comfortably as well as my children."

"I acquired a secondhand motorbike to help me in providing taxi services in our region and earn an income. I am a single parent and I depend on casual jobs to take care of my children. Having the motorbike is an additional source of income. Through the income from it, I have been able effectively fulfil my family's basic needs like buying daily foodstuffs. Our area is also faced with a water shortage. Through the motorbike, I have been supplying and selling water in our villages at a fee, thus earning an income in the process. I took the small portion of the transfer that remained to clear the school fees for my son."

"Owning livestock has been my main aspiration since its one of the best income generating activity that we are practising in our poverty stricken region. I however did not own any livestock in my homestead because I could not afford to buy them. As at now, I am happy to have goats that I bought through the GiveDirectly transfer, which makes it to be the biggest difference in my daily life. My expectation is that they will reproduce and increase in number. I can sell the offspring to help me out in case of a financial need."
