Sidi
received a $500 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber, and threads. This was for the construction of a new house because the previous one was almost collapsing. I then paid the mason KES 7000 as the labor fr the job he did. Also, I bought a goat at KES 5000 which will serve as the living asset that I can lean on. Also, I cleared the school fees arrears for my children who reopened schools recently. With the reaming amount of money, I am using it in buying foodstuffs for my family"

received a $500 initial payment.
"The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to build another house that is bigger and roofed with iron sheets. We, therefore, have enough space. The children now have their room that is comfortable to sleep in and study. I have hence also been able to relax and I no longer have stress about where I am going to get the money to do so. Having bought school uniforms and paid school fees for my children, I now feel relieved and with peace of mind. I am assured that they will be able to study without them being interrupted due to school fees arrears. They are also happy because of this and also because they got new clothes for themselves. The food that I bought with part of the transfer will enable us to have something to eat for a while. I will hence not be having worries about what my family is going to eat. All this is thanks to GiveDirectly for this noble program that they thought of starting to help the needy. May God bless you a lot."

Raeli
received a $500 initial payment.
"This transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I bought a calf and two goats that I want to rear. I also built another house for ourselves and I paid the school fees for my grandchild. The transfer also enabled me to buy some food that is, a bag of maize, some clothes for us and our grandchild, two mattresses, and two blankets. I also used part of it to cure myself. We have always wanted to build another house because we have been living in only one house that is small and grass-thatched. The space in the house has hence not been enough for us and our grandchild. I also bought a calf and two goats because we do not have milk for our consumption and we usually buy it. Although we have always desired to do the above developments, we have not been in a position to because we are old and we are no longer able to work. We usually sell a few things that we have grown on our farm such as bananas, avocados, and vegetables to get the money that we use to sustain ourselves. This money that we get from the sale of those goods is only enough for us to buy everyday food and milk. Our children at times support us by sending us money to buy food and other necessities."

Joseph
received a $500 initial payment.
"Having a dairy cow in my compound has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. I have been longing to keep it for quite a long time but I could not afford it since they were very expensive. I settle in buying it because since some of my children are still young, I had to look for a living asset that would help me generate income. In a few months to come, the cow will be producing milk and I will be selling them to my neighbors and save whatever I will earn. I believe the money will help me in schooling my children and meet other basic needs. I am thankful to be among the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly."

"I spent KES 37000 of my first transfer on buying livestock which include two cows and three goats. Besides, I will be benefiting from the milk that these cows will be producing. I will sell and earn an income. In addition to this, I also purchased a new bed and a matress to replace the old bedding that I was using for years. Charo
received a $500 initial payment.
"I have been staying in a grass thatched house for years with no hope of upgrading to a better house. My desire was to renovate it to be an iron roofed like my neighbours. Living in a grass thatched home was not conducive mostly during rains which it would soak every item in my home and at times forced to seek shelter elsewhere. When I received my first transfer, I purchased iron sheets, nails and timber to rebuild my house. In addition to this, I also bought a new mattress to sleep on comfortably and replace the old bedding I was using. I did some shopping on the remaining amount on new clothes for my family and foodstuffs that will take us a whole month, since food was also a problem to me."
