How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I had never received the transfer. My life has been empowered. Through the transfer, I was able to acquire livestock this is something that I rely on when I face any challenge in my life. In addition, I was able to clear the fee balances for my children and even paid for the next two terms. By doing so, they are now able to learn without their studies interrupted by lack of fees. I also have enough food for my family since stocked enough foodstuffs which will take me up to the end of July. With my job of charcoal vending, I will be able to save some amount which will assist me in other basic needs like clothing.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDireclty doing well by providing training before sending out the transfer to the extremely poor household. This has enabled every household to spend the transfer appropriately. I do not see anything wrong that GiveDirectly is doing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on purchasing a dairy cow for $135, this is the future investment that will assist me in educating my children when it multiplies. I also invest $120 in my kid's educational needs by paying fees for two terms. I used the remaining amount to provide food for my family by purchasing enough foodstuffs. This is because my husband is jobless and we did not have any means of getting food so thought I was good to stock sufficient food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was preparing lunch for my children when I heard my phone ringing continuously. I decided to check the message only to realize that it was from Give Directly informing me they had sent me the first transfers. I was overwhelmed with joy and started celebrating with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to clear the huge school fees balance for my children. They had stayed home for a while even before the covid19 pandemic invaded the country. Some had lost hope and had planned to drop out of school and engaged themselves in casual jobs. But then my good Lord has always been on my side because it is the same months I was enrolled and promised some cash. Therefore after receiving the money, sending my children back to school was the first priority. They are now hopeful and happier because they are sure of accomplishing their dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles nails, and thread. This was for the construction of a new house for my children whom we have been sharing the same house which was not spacious enough. I later bought some four goats and a dairy cow. This has been my desire to keep them in my compound but I could not afford them because they were very expensive. Also, I cleared their fees balances and they are now studying without any disturbances. I am using the remaing amount of money in buying enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to fulfill my desires of owning a spacious house and having livestock. My current house is not spacious to accommodate us with my family, Whereby it forces them to seek shelter from my neighbors and some are spending their night in the kitchen, I feel uncomfortable with this situation so far. When I receive the transfers I intend to use 50,000 shillings to build a three-roomed house for the family. I will also use 30,000 shillings to buy five cows for milking which will provide income and help in any financially emergency. The remaining amount I will save to pay for my children's school fees when schools resume.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a casual labourer, I usually move to different farms searching for ploughing jobs. It is tiresome because sometimes I have to move to far distances. Evening becomes the happiest part of my day because this is the time I feel relaxed and spends more time with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I had a dream of starting a business of selling livestock at our nearby center during market days. I have not been able to do so because as a casual labourer the income I get is not enough to start this kind of business as well as expanding my house. Therefore lack of source of income is the biggest hardship I have faced in my life.
