"My ambition is to be a successful business woman in future, I'm currently a teacher by profession nearing retirement next year. After retirement I want to open a boutique town and use the income to educate my children. After loans and tax deduction I have a salary of 17,000 which is not enough to provide the basic needs for my family. When I receive this money I will pay for school fees."

"My life is currently different from the way it would have been had I not received the transfer in that if it was not for the money I would still be staying in the leaking house. My previous house had a broken roof with a better part of the wall fallen off. Everyone could see me from outside, it was more or less the same as staying in the open air. I am glad I can have my privacy since the current house has a door and is fully covered."

"As a subsistence farmer, educating my children has been the toughest challenge I have faced. Since produce from our farm is just enough to sustain us without any surpluses for sale, I was forced to sell almost all the cattle I had to raise school fees for my children. So far, two of our children have completed their basic education by completing Grade 12. Unfortunately, the struggle for raising school fees has prevented us from raising the needed capital for venturing into the poultry farming business."

"The biggest hardship we have faced as a family is the frequent instances of lack of food in our household. Frequent droughts and tropical diseases have been destroying our crops. Hence, we always do some casual jobs to supplement whatever we could attain from our farms. As such, we have never managed to save any money that could be used in purchasing a cow that would serve as a reliable source of milk for consumption."

"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have started business which was not possible before . I used to do casual jobs in the village. This casual jobs could earn me a small income and I was not able to meet all the basic needs of the family. I could struggle so much and spent most of my time away from home, I had no time for my family unlike nowadays where I have enough time at home with my family. Currently I have started a business of buying cows from farmers and sell at the market. This earns me profits to meet my daily household expenditure and save some amount in merry go round group that we have started in our village. I have bought better clothes for my family members. I no longer buy milk because I have a dairy cow. My children no longer go without milk like before. I am so happy because my living standard has improved. Thanks to GiveDirectly."

"Receiving this money means a roadmap to financial freedom in my household. We are jobless and have been struggling to make ends meet through farming. We have 1 acre of land which we have grown maize solely for domestic use. In this piece of land, we harvest approximately 6 bags which not enough to cater to a family of 5 and thus no surplus for sale. We are therefore planning to buy a dairy cow which costs approximately Ksh 20,000. Our projection is to milk approximately 5 liters a day. Out of this, we will sell 3 liters at Ksh 45 per liter and the remaining 2 liters, will be used domestically. This will be a stepping stone to our financial freedom."
