"Unlike in the previous years, this year I will have food for the whole year. The bags of maize I have bought with this transfer plus what I harvested will definitely take me to the next harvesting season. This cash grant from GiveDirectly has made a tremendous difference in my daily life. I will no longer be going out for casual labour in people's farms and instead I will concentrate on my farm which will make me harvest enough in the next farming season. In the previous years, I used to harvest less food because I spent most days working in other people's farms in exchange for daily bread."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials which include several pieces of iron sheets, timber, building poles, and nails. This was for the construction of a new house because the initial one was in a very bad state with a grass-thatched roof. In addition to that, I purchased goats that I am currently rearing in my compound. I am now proud because I have assets that are I can depend on in case of any financial crisis. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family."
