"The past two years have been filled with anxiety and hard work. Trying to build and run a salon in Ganze Town has taken everything I've had to offer emotionally, physically, and financially. GiveDirectly choosing me to receive the transfers meant that I could inject much-needed funds into the business. Lotions, water, and sodas, all for my clients, were among the items I purchased. Trying to make the salon a heaven of relaxation and peace was greatly aided by these additions. I also added more braids, wigs, weaves, and other hair accessories to use on my clients. With no husband and relying solely on my income to support myself and my children, it can be difficult to raise $35 to pay for my shop's rent.As a result, part of the funds were used to service some of the months in advance. My two children are in school. They both attend the PCEA Primary School in Grade 2 and PP 1, and their tuition is $40 and $20, respectively. The funds helped me in paying a good part of this in advance. Given the challenges I had been facing, such as the drought, which had resulted in a low yield from our 1.5-acre farm, which we use for domestic purposes, it was a blessing to have GiveDirectly shine some much-needed hope into our lives."

"Since i graduated from secondary school in 2019, i haven't been able to further my studies due to financial crisis. It was always my dream to attend university with the plan to read Accounting with emphasis in Management but there was no support financial. So with the opportunity of receiving unconventional cash from Give Directly, i am saving all my transfers until the entire transfer process is over and use it to go to university."

"I was at home fencing my compound at that moment when I received my transfer. I heard my phone ring and upon checking, I was surprised to see that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I immediately rushed to my mum's place to share the good news. On reaching her home, I found her in a celebratory mood because she had also received her cash transfer. We then jointly embarked on where we would cash out our transfer."

"My husband is a farmer whereas I run a daycare in Bomet. Together, we have three children and one grandchild. When I received my transfer, I opted to pay school fees for my son at the University where I spent $200. Secondly, I spent $300 to enhance my house by putting up tiles on the floor. Lastly, I spent $50 on foodstuff. All this wasn't possible before because I had a sick child to take care of plus the responsibility of paying for school fees. I'm grateful for the support that amazingly uplifted my living standards."

"Destruction of my garden full of onions in the months of October and November of 2022. The rains were so intense and they ended up resulting to mudslides. The mudslides carried away most of my crops and taking away all the topsoils that had fertilizers in them. This led to very poor yields even right now we did not harvest more than 7bags of onions and yet in the past years we would harvest about 15bags. Our garden that had beans was so destroyed. This has resulted to hunger and currently do not have enough food to eat and also secure the food for February."

"I used $500 to buy food for my family, another $1000 to buy clothes for my children and another $1000 to improve our home. $1000 was used to improve my farming practices and the remaining amount was used to buy a heifer. Buying a heifer was on top of my priority list since I had a piece of land where I would take care of it in there. I had been unable to do all these investments since I depend so much on farming that earns me very little amount of money hardly enough to make ends meet."

"When I was told that I would be among the beneficiary of GiveDirectly, I felt that it had lifted a heavy load off my back. This is because I am a mother of nine and I depend on farming and selling vegetables to make ends meet. My husband left for the capital, but the unfortunate thing is that he neglected us and chose to remarry. It left me to fend for my children single-handedly. Life has become unbearable because of the economic status of our country today. Upon receiving my transfer, I used $450 to build a decent house for my family. The one that I had was very old and weak. It was not easy to renovate before due to school fees and responsibilities. Secondly, I bought maize and saved the rest for school fees needs. I am so happy for the support that impacted my life positively."

"My husband had saved $200 from his construction work to pay for the dowry, but it was insufficient. He needed more time to raise the deficit. We knew it was time to finish the cultural obligation of paying a dowry. when GiveDirectly did promise us an unconditional transfer. As a result, we added $300 to our transfer. I then spent $50 on wire mesh to fence the poultry house for security and ease of management. Finally, I purchased eighteen iron sheets to expand my home because we are expecting our first child. All of this would not have been possible if I had not received the financial assistance, for which I will be eternally grateful to GiveDirectly."
