My husband work as a daily contractor just to provide our daily meal and we are currently residing in my father-in-law house. We got enrolled into Givedirectly unconditional cash transfer program and started receiving transfer. My husband and I decided to engage into business and build a house on our own. Our first and second transfer was deposited as partial payment toward a brand new motorcycle which the recent transfer was used to complete the payment and we got one bundle of zinc with the balance portion of the recent transfer. My husband is presently running commercial bike to help with the family needs as well as purchase additional building materials as we await our final transfer which will be use for similar purpose."

"In my opinion Givedirectly is doing extremely well by helping us to achieve our goal. It has long been my goal to build, but there was no money to ensure my dream turns to reality and I think Givedirectly can do better with more support beyond what we have already received."

"Being a single mother to five children and raising them solely without a reliable job has not been a walk in the park. To provide for my family, I have been relying on maize that I plant for both family and commercial consumption. When I was enrolled in the program, my initial plan was to buy land but since my first born son had been sent home by the time I received the transfers, I had to split the transfers into two. I spend $270 to pay fees arrears and the balance to buy a bull which I'm planning to sell in a year or two so that I can buy a piece of land. I am happy that my son will be able to sit for him final high school exams this year and I will buy a land later, I am so thankful to GiveDirectly for the support."

"I am a father of one child and I have an industrious wife who always helps me in decision making. The moment I received my transfer, I sat down with my wife and we made an agreement that we needed to build a new house. Our old muddy house could no longer contain us and it was really giving me and my family self esteem issues. Before the transfers, we bought building stones and land but we had no money to pay for labour and not even enough to start the foundation. The moment I received my transfers, I made an agreement not to spend the transfers on anything else apart from fully investing it in my home construction. I started the foundation of my home and the second transfer was also used to complete my house. At least now I have a place to call home and I am really one happy man who can now confidently interact with everyone in my village."

"I was living in an old hut that I have always wished to renovate but the other financial obligations I had could not allow when I received the first transfer. Upon receiving the second transfer, I spent $260 on buying construction materials that include 14 iron sheets, gravel, wood, and also paid the labor charges. I also spent $12 on paying school fees for my two children currently in primary school. Even though I have driving skills, I have been dependent on subsistence farming whose surplus has been useful in settling other household bills. I later bought a dairy cow at $14 that I hope to provide us with enough milk when it calves. I am grateful for the timely generous support when I was at the verge of selling part of my land to use in building a new house."
