"I used my most recent transfer to pay school fees for my siblings. My parents had not cleared paying their school fees since they depend on casual jobs. I also used part of my transfer to buy household items such as gas cylinder, bedding and pay rent since I was settling in a new house. Before I received my transfer, I was staying with a friend. I saved the remaining amount since I am planning to start a new business where I sell second hand clothes. Currently I am depending on casual jobs and this business will be a source of income to meet my basic needs and pay school fees for my siblings."

"My life has improved a lot since I received the transfers from GiveDirectly. I built a latrine and no longer hide in the bush to relieve myself. We feel civilized and modern for this. It was so primitive and shameful to beg for other people's latrines who could at times turn us away. The bushes are also unsafe as they are the homes of dangerous snakes and at times some passersby could peap and see me squatting which was so self- defeating. I constructed a kitchen which nowadays serve as a separate cooking room unlike before when the main house served as kitchen, sitting room and a bedroom. I remember one day when I had visitors and there was a lot of smoke as I used a traditional stove. I could see that they were not comfortable but unfortunately I had no altertive. I paid school fees for my children who are doing well. Education gives me hope for the future and better living standards. I spent the remaining part of the transfer to buy a cow that is soon calving. I hope it shall provide me with milk that would definitely improve the food security and nutrition for my household. The money that I have been spending to buy milk will then be saved and diverted to restock my small scale business. GiveDirectly has painted pictures of hope, greatness and brighter future in my mind that I would always live to embrace. Thanks a lot the donors."

"My life is different in that I managed to plant two hectares of sugarcane. Sugarcane is the main cash crop in this region since we have industries around that provide for ready market. Sugarcane is also a form of investment that is more sustainable as it is harvested more than once. I feel secured for the future in that when I harvest and get paid, I shall be able make my dream of building a permanent house come true, pay school fees for my children with ease, buy a cow that will provide me with milk, and also buy food for may children. Thanks for GiveDirectly transfers at least I have some hope for the future."

"My expectation in the near future is to be financially stable. Being financially stable means I can take care of my children's needs comfortably without so much struggle. I also want to reduce the amount of casual work that I sometimes overdo working on people's farms and concentrate in my own farm."

"In the next six months, I expect to have constructed a new house for my children. They are currently living in a house which is in bad condition and is almost collapsing. This would at least improve my happiness since we would be having a clean home with more space in the house for my children to read and sleep. We are praying to God that all our plans to establish that new house will go through."

"The weather is too hot thus has affected crop production and water availability in this area. I currently survive on food that I buy from shops which is too expensive for me given that I burn charcoal as my only means of getting income and the proceeds from it are very low mostly between 500 to 1000 shillngs a month. Water is most expensive as a 20 litre jerican goes for 35 shillings up from 5 shillings. Our water pans are almost dried up because of the extremely hot weather. "

"In the next six months, I expect my life to be much better. This is because I will be enjoying higher income from the sale of the farm products (potatoes and cabbages) that I will have planted and harvested from the leased farm. Besides, I will have completed planting tea in my farm. Thus, I will be more confident with regards to supporting my children as they pursue their studies. I will be having reliable sources of sufficient funds to be used in paying school fees and financing other necessary projects."

"In the next six months, I expect to save my transfers and add some of my earnings to use as capital to start up and run my own shop. This will be my best alternative source of earnings. As a result, I will no longer have to depend on hard and unreliable casual jobs."
