Rhoda
received a $368 second payment.
"My life is currently better after receiving the transfer. Earlier before receiving the transfer, My mother used to sponsor my child's education. I have a son who is in secondary school. She does tea plucking jobs which earn her little money but she used to spare some of it to pay my child's school fees. It usually broke my heart seeing her struggle to pay my own child's school fees since I had no financial capacity to do it. Getting the transfer has enabled me to pay for my child's school fees. This has eased the burden on my mother's and I am much happier. I have even supported her by paying my sister's school fees. It gives me joy that I can now stand on my own courtesy of the transfer."

Elvis
received a $531 second payment.
"I spent the transfer on paying school fees for my son who is in form two. I value education because it empowers people and enables the community to make good choices in life. I felt so embarrassed when our people refused to embrace the GiveDirectly program due to illiteracy and ignorance while languishing in extreme poverty.I would not like a repeat of such a mistake in the generation of my children. I never had an opportunity to get proper education that could equip me with the necessary and relevant skills to compete the job market and this has hindered me from leading a better life. My father refused to pay my school fees being that he had a polygamous family and instead preferred to provide for the younger wife. The pain of denial to education haunts me a lot and therefore would not like that my children go through the same. I lack any form of investment that I can give to my children and therefore education is the best I could offer them."

Lavender
received a $46 fourth payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I have been able to pay my college fee without much stress. I completed my secondary education the previous year and did not have any hope of joining a tertiary college. I am so happy to continue pursuing my education and I will forever thank GD for bringing back my lost hope."

"I believe in educating my girls, a mission that has seen me lose a husband I dearly love gradually. Unlike me, he believes its a waste of resources and that marrying them off is much more beneficial because he will get dowry in form of cows and cash. Now he rarely comes home and has completely abandoned his responsibilities as a father leaving me to struggle on my own to provide food, education and other basic needs of the family. This has been very difficult given that I work as a casual labourer at a small hotel cooking and waiting on tables with a maximum pay of 1 dollar a day."

"After completing his secondary education last year, my son is still at home waiting for some kind of miracle so that he can further his studies. Well, his miracle is finally here thanks to Give directly. I intend to use the first transfer to pay part of his college fees and the rest I will invest in livestock which I can sell to keep him in school. "

Beryl
received a $23 twelfth payment.
"My new goal is to start a business when I complete college. With this business, I will be able to support my family to educate my siblings who are still in lower levels of education. This probably I am hoping to achieve in the next four months God willing GiveDirectly continues sending me the transfers."

"My two children completed secondary education in 2017 but I have not been able to take them to college. They currently work as casual labourers in Mombasa and their earnings are not enough to sustain their needs. My desire is to see them through college that will provide better job opportunities for them. GiveDirectly has come as a savior and I will be able to fulfill my dreams. In this regard, I will Start a livestock rearing project that will finance their tertiary education."

Rose
received a $531 second payment.
"I spent my second transfer on fees payment. I have two children in University, and one in secondary school, and payment of school has been very difficult due to low income. I am just a small scale business woman, and what I get could not support the family. Sincerely, I did not get opportunity to accomplish my education because of inadequate resources, and could not expect my own children to pass through the same life. I have to toil until my children get proper education themselves."
