"In an area like ours where the only reliable economic activities are subsistence farming, charcoal burning and livestock keeping, a house wife like me is forced to fully depend on her husband. Considering my husband's livestock business whose capital is borrowed from friends, the profit earned is usually divided equally with the lender. This makes his income unreliable since it can not sustain our family needs. Receiving this money means providing capital to my husband in order to invest in his business. I will use part of the transfers to repair my house and the remaining amount will support our children's education."

"I spent part of the transfer on buying two heifers. I have been rearing livestock for many years and when GiveDirectly came to our village, I already had some cows that I was rearing in my home and selling milk which has been my source of income. My passion has been to have many of the cows in order to increase milk production. I bought the heifers to add to the cowshed and they are my assets too. Also when they mature, I will increase the milk production which I have been selling. I had also constructed a new house using the first transfer but I could not completely pay for the full cost of labor, thus I paid KES 14,000 of the transfer to meet its full expenses. I also spent KES 2550 to pay school fees for my children who are in their primary level of education. I paid for a whole term and I am happy that they will comfortably continue with their studies without any interruptions concerning school fees."

"Despite it being a love of many men in my community, palm wine does not fetch very good profits because its supply exceeds the demand. This has made it extremely difficult for me to meet all my family's needs such as food, education and medication for my elder brother who is both mentally ill and epileptic. With no husband to support me, life gets very tough at times when I hardly make any money. I'm grateful for Give Directly though because now I will be more financially stable. "

"The biggest hardship that I am faced with is inadequacy of farm land.
I am not I position to cultivate as expected because of the limitations of space.
The little that I am able to harvest usually is not good enough to support all my household needs because I have to sell part in order to provide for my children's education needs and other needs of the family.
This leaves me with very little to depend on as food hence food shortage.

"Iam going to build iron- roofed house with this money. My family has suffered for every long period of time renovating grass-thatched. This has made me fail to save some money for providing other basic needs like food, clothing and education."

"I'm so happy that this money helped me acquire some items which were lacking in my household. Previously I owned livestock but I sold all in order to pay school fees for the children. I'm so glad that I managed to buy a cow that will reproduce and supply me with milk for consumption and sale. If it wasn't of GiveDirectly I wouldn't have been in position to pay school fees for my children. I'm proud that when this children complete their education the future will be bright for them. Finally I managed to replace my old shamy household items like mattress, Bed sheets, clothes and curtains that have made my house presentable when I have visitors."

Florence
received a $442 second payment.
"My life has changed in that, I have managed to renovate my house and buy for my children new mattresses and bed sheets which has made me very happy. Previously, I didn't have enough money to renovate my house since the little I got from agricultural produce was spent on children's education and food. Some of my children slept on mats and others on very old mattresses."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well by bringing about development in my community. This is evidenced from the improved housing, feeding, education for children among others. To me, It has helped give me money that helped me at the time when I really needed it. For example at the time my family was undergoing a lot of trials.
However, in my opinion there is nothing bad that GiveDirectly has done."
