"In April we managed to buy a dairy cow. I am so happy to have bought it because I have never owned one before. It has always been my wish to buy one for a long time and I am glad I finally have the courtesy of Give Directly. I was lucky to buy a cow that was almost giving birth. I didn't take long before I started milking it as soon as I had bought it. I feel relieved financially because I do not have to buy milk. This has helped me save more money which I believe will help me start other income generating projects in future."

"My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfer in that, I have a dairy cow which I bought using the transfer. My family now have enough milk for use and also I sell some at the shopping center near home. The income I get from the sales of milk helps me to meet other basic household needs and even pay part of the school fees for my children in various school. Before I could do casual jobs in the village and the small I could get was not enough for the basic needs and even to buy a dairy cow. So I used to buy milk of which it was very costly for me."

"I expect to buy more goats in the near future which I know will eventually give birth to more offspring as time goes by. The good thing about it is that when the population of the livestock increases, I will then have an opportunity of selling out some of them and then buying a cow instead. The advantage of buying a cow is that it is able to provide more milk than a goat and of course if I sell out its calves I will be able to get more money than when I sell a goat."

"My new goals is to start poultry farming and animal rearing. In case I have visitors, I will nor incur the cost of buying sacks of maize or meat. Instead, I will take a few hens or even eggs from my farm and use the money to take care of the various needs. Poultry farming has a good market and I believe within a short period of time I will be able to buy a dairy cow using the proceeds from the poultry farm. Through selling milk I will be able to comfortably take care of my needs and this is why I want to concentrate and ensure these projects are accomplished in the next four months."

"In this community, livestock play a very big role in the lives of most families. They are a form of savings that we depend on to make income so as to fend for other household needs like food and the children's education. When my only dairy cow died about a year ago due to a severe drought, I was so worried that I would not get income to buy food for my family and thus subject them to malnutrition because of lack of other sources of income. This situation has taken a toll on my children physically and academically. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I will be happy to own a cow again since I am planning to spend my first transfer on one. "
