"Receiving this money means building a Permanent house. The house I stay in is grass thatched and it's costly to maintain. Building a permanent iron roofed house will reduce the stress of renovating the house almost every year and that money can be saved for other household needs.
Owning a cow will also be one of my pressing needs. I will buy a cow that will act as an investment for my household as well as a source of food."

Sheila
received a $538 initial payment.
"Before GiveDirectly came, buying milk was my daily routine. I am glad at the moment that all this is in the past since I have my own milk which I get from the dairy cows I bought with the transfer. Even though I am not able to sell some of it, I appreciated the fact that I no longer incur any cost on buying milk. Owning the dairy cows is so far the biggest difference in my daily life that I am and forever be proud of."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months because I will have bought a cow. I plan to buy a cow because there is high demand for milk in this area. Animal feeds also do well in this region and I think I should take advantage of that. I also have enough space and equipment and the right skills for rearing a dairy cow. I will, therefore, continue saving my monthly income and buy a cow."

"The biggest difference in my daily life ever since I started receiving transfers from Give directly is that I was able to buy sheep. I have always wanted to buy sheep because they reproduce twice a year. They also require little attention compared to other livestock such as dairy cows. I felt they will survive and still do well with the climatic condition of this area since they eat less and require little water. They are also in high demand and have a ready market. I feel I made the right decision to buy these sheep because I will get huge profits within a very short period of time"

Ruth
received a $22 sixteenth payment.
"My life is currently different because I meet my needs and those of my family more easily than before. This is because I have an additional income that resulted from investing my transfers over the last four months on chicken layers that have constantly been producing over 60 eggs per week. I am so glad that I don't overstretch my other sources of finances to meet daily basic needs, The salary I earn from my job has been better utilized in establishing a dairy farm project. I have used it to build a dairy unit that can accommodate 6 cows. Plans are now in place and am heading in the right pace towards operations to become a milk producer. I feel that this could not have been possible if I did not have the aid form Give\directly over the last four months."

Margaret
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"Saving money in the past four months was really hard. This is because the little money I was getting from my daily chores was not enough to sustain my family and to be left with some to save. I would always find myself running out of money since the requirements in our household were also many. We had to buy everything right from vegetables, sugar, maize flour, just to mention but a few. This situation got better when I started receiving the transfers from GiveDirectly. I now can save an appreciable amount. The savings that I have been making over time have brought many differences in my daily life and the biggest of all is that they have enabled me to purchase a heifer. This has added to our herd making my cows be two now after the first one which I bought some five years ago. Feeding them is the major work I have currently as one is almost calving down which means we will soon be enjoying a sufficient milk supply."

"The biggest in my life is that I have saved enough money which I used to buy a cow which was sold to me at around 10000 KES. If I had not received cash transfers from GD, I would not have been able to buy it. I believe that this domestic animal will be of great value to my family."

James
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"My dream of owning livestock seemed not to have been achievable before GiveDirectly came. This is because the proceeds I got from casual jobs which are my main source of income were so meager that barely sustained us hence the thought of having livestock over daily needs like food wasn't a priority by then. The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have managed to save my transfers for some time and used it to buy a goat. I settled on rearing goats because they reproduce twice a year and require little attention to rear as compared to other domestic animals. As at the moment I am optimistic that they will reproduce faster with the good care I am giving it and increase in number. Therefore, I shall sell some in our local markets. Apart from that, I will exchange some for a dairy cow so that I can get milk and sell purposely to double my income."

Esther
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"My life is currently different in that I can now eat well and I have a descent roof over my head. I was abandoned by my husband long time a go and I even do not know his whereabout to date. I have always struggled on my own to make ends meet and it is sad that I could not accomplish most of the things that that I thought I would achieve. Most of my children did not get the necessary education that could at least change their lives and they are a struggling lot with their families as well. This has left me with no one to depend on except myself. GiveDirectly transfers have enabled me to improve my house and meet other basic household needs. I am looking forward to buying a dairy cow and maintain the same living standards even after the transfers are over."
