Everline
received an initial payment.
"It was 6 pm when I was heading to my house after I had attended a meeting in the neighbourhood. Then suddenly, I heard my phone ringing. On confirming what the message entailed I realised that I had received money from Segovia technologies. This was the best news that came my way that evening and I was overwhelmed with happiness and joy because I knew that I would be able to execute the plans that I had therefore I embarked on planning how we would cash out our transfers."

"I spent KES 45000 to buy a dairy cow. We had for a long time gone without one and having lost one that we had to a strange disease. I normally rely on motorcycle riding to make income that supports my family and I also run a Berber shop that helps me raise income to support my family but the amount of income that I receive would not allow me make enough income to buy a dairy cow or invest in anything that requires huge sum of money. The income would help me buy food and other basic household needs but I would be left with very little or nothing to save."

"Upon receiving the transfers I went ahead and paid for my school fee debt which was KES 10,000. I also bought timber worth KES 5,000 so that it could help us with the building of the new house.I also went ahead and bought a motorcycle for my brother and a deposit of KES 15,000 because he was going to use it as a means of transport in order to make money. Lastly I used KES 10,800 to buy a bed and a mattress because prior to that I was sleeping on a mat on the ground."

Micah
received a $460 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly. This was the biggest challenge that I was facing at that particular time. I am a motorcycle taxi operator, someone has employed me to work for him. This was so demanding because I had to meet my needs as well. There were no savings I could make due to the daily recurring of basic needs. I used to spend KES 50 per day on milk and sometimes whenever I had no money my children would miss getting milk and this was so stressful. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I decided to invest in dairy cows. Currently, I have enough milk for my family and this had given me peace of mind since I no longer struggle like before. I wish to grow this to another level since this in the long run will be my main source of income. I will be selling milk since there is demand and I will save the money to buy another dairy cow."

Keiyo
received an initial payment.
"It is barely a year after I got married and since then we had been living with my wife in a single house that I previously had. It was our plan to put up another new house, but after great deliberation; we decided to spend the full amount added to the savings we had and bought a motorcycle worth KES 65000. we had been spending a lot while commuting to and from our workplaces that are a distant way from home. With the motorcycle, we have had a simple time since we are currently spending on fuel, which is much cheaper compared to the previous months. We are planning to construct a new house with the second transfer and in case of extra cash, we also have a plan to buy a cow."

"For quite a long time we struggled as a family since my husband is a motorbike rider but he was just employed for a daily wage. Out of what he gets he divides it with the owner of the motorbike. This was so unfortunate because we lacked the basic needs as a family. When I received the first transfer, together with my husband we saw it wise to buy our motorbike so that what he gets from the if would be ours wholly. Therefore, I bought a second-hand motorbike for KES 45000.00. This motorbike is for light transport and my husband is the rider. I also paid KES 1000.00 examination money for my two primary school children who had been sent home for the same. Since it was a drought season, we did not get harvests from our farms so I opted to buy a bale of maize flour for KES 2350.00 to ensure food security for my family. Lastly, I took KES 3000.00 and went to visit my ailing mother at the hospital."

"The major challenges am facing presently is finances. My spouse is a motorcyclist but we don't have money to buy our own motor bike. He rides for other people and at times the motor bike owner will take the bike from him. When that happens, things can be very difficult for us because that is the only means of survival we have. We don't even have a house on our own and we can't afford to rent. Currently, someone felt sorry for us and give us one room in his house. The fact that we are living in someone's house is a serious embarrassment for me and my spouse."

Katana
received a $461 initial payment.
"The achievement that I count on from the transfer is that I was able to pay back the money I borrowed to take my young brother to school since I serve as his guardian. Being an orphan is a challenging thing but, I am grateful for the support I got from GiveDirectly, it mattered in my life. Apart from the school issue, the transfer restored my peace of mind from the harassment I was receiving from a man who sold me a piece of land and I was left with KES 20000.00 to pay him. Through the transfer, I settled the land issue and I am now leaning in peace."

Kirui
received a $461 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the improved running of my business. I have been saving a lot since I spent less on transport from home to the workplace and also on making timely deliveries to my customers. The motorcycle I bought has cushioned me a lot from hiring a rider that was so expensive. I have saved the daily KES 100 transport to and from the workplace since I have been using the same means from home and back later in the evening."
