How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I pray to have a good life . My goal is to have more customers and eventually expand my grocery business . I have good luck in business with good customer service skills so I also hope to open a hotel business by January , next year . All these requires $200 and I hope to raise it from my current grocery shop .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The best thing you have done is to start this project of giving people money . This money has been of great help to people in different ways . We have built houses , bought cattle and paid school fees for our children . We are grateful , how I wish that you could come back to our village and help us even more . May God always fill your pockets . There is nothing to improve from my side .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm married but still the sole bread winner for my family since my husband has no job . When I received the second transfer , I gave $260 to my husband for him to process a passport and a apply for a job in the middle east . Although he is yet to travel , I'm glad that this transfer made the whole process easier . I have three children in primary school , I cleared their school fees for the whole year , this amounted to $50 . I paid $40 in a merry go round and I'm expecting to boost my business when my turn to receive comes . I also bought one bag of maize at $70 and I'm sure this will push us for a long while . Previously , I used to do charcoal business and it was so tiresome ! So I opened a grocery business using $26 .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 in the evening when I was still at my daily hustle when I heard a very loud vibration from my phone. I ignored it since I felt it is the random Safaricom messages that I have been receiving. A few minutes later, there was another message that popped in and after checking, I confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed with happiness for being sure that I will finally build a new house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now happier and more satisfied. This is because before then, I used to shelter at my father-in-law's house where I felt I lacked privacy plus it was against our culture. My initial house collapsed since it was very weak and small. I have been through so many troubles ever since I got married. It reached a time I was almost giving up because my spouse and I do not have reliable sources of income. Therefore the coming of GiveDirectly in my life has for sure restored my lost joy and hope in life. I will forever be thankful because I now have a very big house which I constructed through financial support. I have happily been sheltering with my four family members without any worries like before. Also, there is enough privacy between my children and I.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets building poles, nails, and threads and the labour charges which cost around KES 41700. This was purposeful for the construction of a new house because I used to stay at my father inlaws house since mine collapsed a few years ago. I never had peace of mind since it was taboo according to our culture. Also, the room was too small to accommodate my four family members. Therefore it is now a relief because I feel I have enough freedom. Also, I paid fees and bought school uniforms for my three children who are in grade four at a total of KES 2000. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for the family that served us for almost a month.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This is my golden chance to achieve all plans I have always wanted to do, I plan to build myself a 2 roomed house, one bedroom for me and my spouse while the other room will be for my children. On the second transfer I want to buy beddings for the whole family, which currently are sleeping on mats, and during the cold season the children easily catch pnemonia. Lastly I want to save, and start a small grocery where I can deliver within the households because at the moment, people travel to Bamba or Ganze for shopping of small commodities. Am sure from the transfer I will be able to make good profits.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There is this time, my spouse bought us 1 kg of meat, which had been very long since my children had had a taste of meat and we can say it has been the best day. We hope in the near days we can be having at least once in a month.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I feel bad because I don't have a place to stay and my father in law has allocated a room near the center, where I stay and do small business. It's kind of a big stress to me because I have been cut away from my inlaw family and whenever I visit them, we look more of visitors. My current business is still small and mostly I get into losses, it hasn't been growing well, due to few customers, or low demand so I plan to switch off business or I expand it.
