"I spent part of my first transfer to buy an ox to help me in ploughing my land. Initially, I was hiring at a fee from my neighbours which was too costly and it took a lot of time before getting an opportunity for my farm to be cultivated due to the many people who also wanted the same service. I also spent some amount of money to buy four goats for domestic rearing and also as financial security for the future of my children's education. In addition to all these, I bought Iron sheets and some other building materials to construct my new house since the old one I was living in was in a bad state that was beyond repair, and it would constantly leak in times of rains for the roof was grass thatched. I can't forget mentioning buying clothes and enough food for my family."

"I used part of the transfer to buy iron sheets to construct a new house. The remainder of the money I will spend on buying timber and pay labour and soon start construction. The house that I currently live in was built 29 years ago and is not in a good condition. I fear when the rain comes it might collapse on us, over the years, it has weakened. The walls are worn out and the roof is leaking too."

"I spent my second transfer on building a shed for my cattle because the one I had formerly was old and had no roof, as a result, my animals were being rained on during rainy seasons which made them uncomfortable especially at night. I also used my transfer to build a pit latrine because I did not have one and used to relieve myself in the bushes and sugarcane plantations around my home which is very unhealthy. I used to feel ashamed when I had visitors around and they ask for a place to refresh themselves. I spent the remaining part of my transfer to rent a piece of land which I am planning to plant sugarcane on. I had always longed to own a sugarcane farm like my peers in the village since it is the major occupation in my area which brings in much income after harvesting. I am glad that GD helped me to achieve my wish."

"I spent my second transfer on building a new house because the one I formerly had was old, had a leaky roof and too small for my large family of eight members. At night when it rained, we had to wake up and cover the roof with polythene bags. I now have a big spacious house and my family feels so comfortable in it even during rainy seasons. I also bought a dairy cow which in the near future will be providing milk for us and God willing will bear more calves to fill my shed."

"The biggest difference is that I can cook in my kitchen even on a rainy day without fear of getting rained on thanks to the new roofing. Besides that, my kitchen is now more spacious and my animals can shelter in at night unlike before they used to sleep outside where they could be rained on and even risked being attacked by wild animals or theft."

"In the six months, I would want to buy building materials. After paying the dowry, I want to ensure I utilise these transfers effectively by building a house of my desire. I would not want to live in a grass-thatched house after this life-changing opportunity. I will save and buy the materials bit by bit until they are enough to build an iron-roofed house."

"Over time now we have been living in an old, small, grass-thatched hut as the main house in our household. We had no plan to construct a new one were it not for the GiveDirectly to come into our village and gave us an aid. This to us was heaven sent because the first idea which came to our mind was for us to construct a new house. This so far have come to pass and it is the biggest difference in our daily life. living in a spacious house, roofed with 22 iron sheets with at least strong walls and a cleaner floor. We thank GiveDirectly so much for the far they have brought us and we are praying that mmay god bless the works of your hands."

"I have spent part of my transfer in constructing a new house, opened a new business, bought goats and a solar panel. I used to leave in a small house built of mud and old iron sheets. The roof was leaking and whenever there was rain, I felt ashamed of it. With the money I received, I bought new iron sheets and timber to construct a new one. I also opened a shop in my compound with part of the money. I stocked the shop with maize flour, wheat and cooking oil and sell to my neighbours. Initially, I was selling charcoal and doing farming and the money I got was not enough to cater for all my needs. With the new business, I will be able to relax and the profit I will get from it will help sustain my family more comfortably. I decided to go against what most people in my village have done, that is, buying cows because now we are experiencing drought and they might sell them at a throwaway price or even most of them die. That will be a loss. So I bought two goats instead. Goats are easy to rear and can survive the dry season. Once they reproduce I will sell and save the profits for future emergencies. The remaining amount I spent on purchasing a solar panel. I don't have to buy paraffin anymore and I am also able to charge my phone, torch and radio at the comfort of my home."

"Living in a one-roomed house with a big family is not easy. We had no privacy, we could dress in turns at least to offer ourselves just a little privacy. This was so embarrassing. My dream for having a spacious partitioned house came to reality after receiving money from GiveDirectly. I managed to build a modern, two-roomed spacious house. What warms my heart every day is the privacy we can now enjoy and that fact that I also have a good house of my dreams makes me feel so happy. My children's life is nolonger at risk given that I sleep with them under the same roof."
